thank you.

im guessing the only other way is to get the original vag-com?

Check the coverage of any diagnostic tool before buying it, Carista is a relatively new tool and the coverage only starts, mainly, with cars that came onto the market in the later stages of Carista design period.

At the end of the listing it says:

PLEASE NOTE ITS NOT GENUINE :D

If it works with the standard Rosstech VCDS software I wonder how it could damage the vehicles electronics, it either communicates or not.

I have a genuine VCDS and cant recall the procedure for downloading the software but I think anyone can do so but it wont work unless connected via a genuine dongle, do these sellers ask you to download a different pirated non protected software? If so then I can see the potential for damage and tears.

If not then it would be attractive to an existing VCDS owner who has reached the 3 or 10 limit of VIN numbers.

It would be VCDS now. Do you think you would benefit from it?

seen an ok price for 250 on ebay.

i do like to mess about on the laptop and my car. checking things over and occasionally changing things.

I’m guessing it’s not genuine? Or is but used?

yep its 2nd hand.

im actually thinking about what you and my wife said, will i use it to its full potential, answer would be no, i wouldnt.

If you are willing to go to the extent of buying a genuine VCDS interface, what you should aim to buy is a HEX-USB+CAN secondhand, the trade-in value for them back to the original supplier is either £83 or £100 so at that price for you they would be a bargain for what they are. It is perfectly acceptable for owners of legitimate VCDS interfaces to do this, you then download VCDS for that type of interface and register it with RossTech to get full support as the original user/owner had - as long as it is a genuine Ross-Tech interface.  I have just traded my HEX-USB+CAN interface in for a HEX-V2 as I needed to get right up to date with 2019 cars.  By the way, the HEX-USB+CAN runs out of life on cars newer than 2017 mainly.

The trouble is with upgrading is unless you spend LOADS they are vin limited, always thought Ross-Tech was a great company because they "didnt" do this, gone the same as all the others now which is dissapointing to be honest.

True, but you can do a lot without needing to use up any of the VINs, anyone outside my family looking for a quick bit of re-coding now will need to stump up at least a 1/10 of the cost of me getting a VIN refresh/extension!

After I posted my last message, I looked on ebay and only a few people re-selling versions that are unlimited, and asking very serious money for them - that could have been me if I had not traded mine in.

Also a few very cheap HEX-V2 around, originally 3VIN versions with either 1 or 2VINs left, I have not checked up on the cost to extend/refresh for another 3 or 10, but maybe they are good value for money, also some bare unlicensed HEX-V2 being disposed of for under £40, not sure what they have surfaced.

the one on ebay for 250 is unlimited vin

That normally makes it a previous version, which is okay for your current use, but a bit annoying when you now know the trade in price for these is only either £83 or £100 depending on which VIN limit/unlimited prof latest type you upgrade to.

hmm...looks like i need to do more research on these.

I'm not saying that greedy sellers are not trying to claim that they can still get £250 for an obsolete version, just be aware that that is what they are selling unless it is getting called HEX-V2 and still has its 3VINs or 10VINs yet.

I agree with whats been said, but a HEX+USB+CAN interface still covers a HUGE amount of vehicles up to about 2018 and is unlimted VIN.........so for me still worth a couple of hundred quid all day long.

i really am tempted to get that 250 but it is an awful lot of money for something il probably only use twice.

I see your point, but "if" you need it its there...........1 hours labour anywhere to put a light out is an expense, it does not take long to get it back.
