Rapid tyre wear

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

Does anybody on here think that 8k out of a front set of tyres is good going? The tyres are Kumho ecsta le sport ku39's if that makes a difference. I also had the alignment checked and it was pretty much smack on and they said that kumho's are a soft compound tyre, but I thought they were medium so I also don't know if that makes a difference. In any instance, 8k seems pretty poor to me.

Many thanks,

Tom

It does seem a little on the low side but if they're wearing evenly it's going to be down to the tyres and/or driving style.

My 2.0tdci Focus used to go through front tyres in 10K-11K miles but I do tend to have a heavy right foot (it was pretty much the same for every mid-range tyre I fitted, Uniroyal, Falken, Hankook).

I fitted Michelin CrossClimates to my Octavia just over a year ago, 10K miles later and the fronts have around 4mm-5mm left.  My driving style hasn't changed much, there's still a big heavy 2.0 diesel engine sitting over the top of the tyres so I can only assume that the Michelins are harder wearing.

I fitted some nasty budgets to an old Focus years back and they scrubbed out after 11K miles, replaced with a decent mid-range which lasted over 20K miles so the actual tyres do play a big part in how long they last :)

Yeah they are wearing fairly evenly. When they do go bald there is generally still some meat on the outside edge (albeit not much) but I'm a little apprehensive of spending on a set of premium tyres only for them to suffer the same fate as these kumho's and scrub after 8k. If i could, as you have, get 10-12k out of them though id be happy. Thanks for the advice

If you've worn the centers faster than the outer edges it would suggest they may have been over inflated a bit.

On the Tyre Review website, the Khumos don't seem to have a great wear rating http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Kumho/Ecsta-KU39.htm

The Falkens I had on my Focus seemed to be wearing very well until I sold it and I don't think they're much more expensive.

No not the centres, the outer edge i.e the part that you see if the wheels are straight. What were the falken's like for grip though? We're they good?

Edit: Sorry my mistake, yes worn the inner edge and centre quicker than outer edge. Sorry

Grip was fine, one of the better mid-range tyres I'd used tbh :)

Skoda monti Carlo

both front tyres are nearly bold so had it tracked up and its fine both straight

scratching my head to why it’s done it again any help please

What tyres are they, how many miles have they done and how old are they (date stamp on the sidewall will give the year and week of manufacture)

Front camber angle excessive? Did the place that "checked the tracking" even measure the camber and caster?

What size and what tyre pressures are involved?

The top of front tyres/wheels lean in towards the engine, camber.

A low tyre pressure will speed up the tyre wear on the inside edge of the front tyres.

Suggests to me, they didn't check these angles properly and tyres not sitting flat on the road

One other thing to check is that some idiot tyre fitter didn't instal them backwards on the rim, so outside is actually inside

Zuhmo tyres 6000 miles both inside of the tyres are bold 205/40/17

205/40/17 30psi but both tyres are bold on the inside

If you have worn the outer edges that suggests under inflation which wears  tyres out more than over inflation.

What pressure are you inflating the tyres to. - is that the cold inflation pressure or are you inflating in a garage when the tyres are warm?

Best wishes,

John

Small car, big diesel FWD, loads of weight on the front. Seem normal to me.

I had the same issues with a 1.9TD Fiat.  New tyres every 6-9000 due to inner shoulder wear. Premium or Budget - all wore out.

Even with regular electronic alignment it ate tyres - that extra 100+ kilos on the front makes all the difference over the petrol models.

As an example - my last set on a petrol FWD went for about 35000 miles with even wear across the tread.

Agreed, and good point about asymmetrics installed backwards.

Try running the fronts at 36 psi and check them regularly with an accurate pressure gauge.

Double check that the front toe is good.

  • 4 weeks later...

6 - 9000 miles is like bike tyres.

Heavy wear on the outside if tracking is o.k. could be heavy footed particularly when cornering with lowish tyre pressure. A soft or cheap compound does not help either.
