Different odometer display on some models

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2006 2.0 PD Elegance estate which has a basic ‘text’ odometer display showing mileage, clock etc. It is simply an LCD display with a green lit background.

I have since noticed that some mk2 models of the same age have an upgraded (colour?) display showing which doors are open etc.

How is it that some models have a basic display and some have an upgraded display when I am talking about cars of the same age? Was it an optional extra perhaps?

I would understand if more basic models had a more basic display but I am talking about Elegance models.

Any feedback most welcome

I believe the maxidot was standard on the L&K but also offered as an option for lower trim levels.

Given you're looking at 2006 cars, it's also possible a previous owner has retrofitted it :)

I seem to remember that with my first VRS (2007), the display that you're asking about (Maxidot) was about £125 extra so it may have been the same for the Elegance too?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

can these maxidot displays easily be fitted to models without it?

Sure. You'll need someone to transfer the mileage/immobiliser data from your current cluster and make sure it's correctly coded.

If you haven't got buttons on the end of the wiper stalk to control it, you'll need to add those (or a multi-function steering wheel) as well.

Thanks langers.

i have the stalk buttons already but how much are we talking to upgrade? Does it have to be done by a specialist (I live in Cornwall)

I have a 2006 Elegance but 1.9 PD, it has the maxidot display, its not colour though.

It depends how much you can find the cluster for. It could be anywhere between £60 and £200 depending on your luck.

You'll need a decent auto locksmith with the right tools to do the fitting properly. This might be between £50 and £100 at a guess?

As J.R. mentioned, it won't be colour (no MK2 got a colour MFD) but it will give you more functions than the basic half height MFD fitted as standard.

This is a maxidot cluster that should be right for your car.

Before I bought my car I enquired with my local VW specialist about fitting costs and they quoted £40 to fit and code a second hand cluster.

Luckily when I found my car it already had it fitted as a factory option.

It really does make the dashboard look a lot more modern compared to the standard green LCD.

The part no on the above one is the same as mine. Mine is a 2005 1.9 PD.

To add a little more evidence from the field both our '07 mk2s (1.9PD ambiente and 2.0PD 4x4) have monochrome MFDs.
