Bodywork distortion

Featured Replies

I have a Skoda Fabia 1.0 95 TSI 2019 car...…...After two weeks old I noticed what looks like a warped or distorted roof in several places...…..I know the car has not received damage, there are no impact marks or scratches, no folds or creases in the metal, just warps and a recess in the roof with no plausible explanation...….I have an ongoing case open with Skoda customer services UK, but I just wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced this issue.

Perhaps a deck of a road transporter was dropped on it and the repair job didn’t go to plan?

Naughty kid walked on it?

Photo's would be nice so we can see the damage! But your sort of damage is very uncommon.

Looking at the picture isn't anywhere near as good as the eye...…….But if you expand the pic I attach you can see the distortion via the reflection in the paintwork...…..

I’m convinced that is a repair to a roof with too much filler, or perhaps a cold dent repair that’s caused it. The roof is very thin and both types of repair can cause the metal to warp like that.

Be interesting to hear what SUK have to say about it.

In all honesty it's difficult to see any problems in that photo setting. You need to back it away from the house and you need to have straight lines reflecting on the roof.  However, if you are concerned you must go to the dealer you bought it from.

Look on the roof above where the drivers head would be.

Where you can see the reflection of the top of the downstairs window.

That’s what I could see

Thanks for your replies folks, I will attach another pic, hopefully when you expand it you will see it a bit better...…...Had the car from new since March...….No known damage to my knowledge. Only noticed this after washing it two weeks after having, and I thought at the time the roof is very flimsy...…..It's parked on my drive in our cul-de-sac, and at my local train station...….There are no folds in the metal, no creases, no impact marks, anywhere on the car.....Skoda UK have said it is not covered by a warranty repair but as a gesture of goodwill they will get some quotes to repair the issues...….I spoke with them today and they are waiting for a written quote from bodyshop via the local dealer, and they will book it in for repair.....Works would involve removing the head lining and pulling out each dent area and possible spot weld work...…...Even the approved coachworks company said it looked like someone had run over the roof but that they couldn't see any point of impact damage or scratches anywhere on the car!!

latest car roof pic.jpg

There are ways or pulling that out without the head lining being removed or the paint being damaged.

Any chance someone was a bit heavy-handed with a polishing machine? I recall someone on another forum complaining that in polishing the roof he left dents in his current model VW Polo.

Thanks AG. Yes I can see it now. I was in to much of a hurry to spot it.

It's not normally a warranty issue unless you spot that at the time of purchase. Sounds like dealer is going the extra mile for the op. Great!

I had similar damage to one of my Fabia Estate cars just a few short years ago. I even saw it happen. I was parked in a retail park on a Bank holiday weekend. As I was walking away from my car two large policemen pursued a fairly large chap across the car park. Unfortunately for me, they caught up with him at the side of my car. This led to him having to stand facing my car and leaning forward against it with his legs slightly apart whilst being searched. In his frustration at having been caught he thumped his fist onto my roof making the exact same indentation on my roof that you have. He was caught with considerable valuables upon his person that he had just nicked. I brought a successful action against him but gained nothing as he was just a stupid criminal ignorant ****** with no money and a criminal past as long as both my legs put together. No chance of getting any compensation. Difficult to sue the Police as they were only doing their job under difficult conditions I might say, and it really wasn't their fault and just not worth anymore of my time. It's just the way it worked out. As it happened it was easy to fix and cost just peanuts to do. Paintless dent removal did the job and it was good as new afterwards. I used Dent Devils. It cost £95 inc VAT at the time (8 years ago). I'm a fussy bugger and I really couldn't tell there had been any damage afterwards.

Indeed it's difficult re the roof......As mentioned before, no impact marks, creases or folds in the metal......The roof is very flimsy...….New car 1st week of March 2019, it's just frustrating as it's also going in for the third time next Wednesday due to a problem selecting first gear, which has gotten worse since I picked it up...…..Not the kind of things you'd expect from a new car......

Is your reverse gear ok? Quite a few folks are having issues with their reverse gear and first gear on the 6spd gearboxes and there is a dealer TPI (bulletin) out about it requiring a gearbox strip down. I'm not sure if the 5spd units are affected. New idler gear and a new shim required and some other bits. It's the reason I no longer buy Skoda or any VAG cars. My last 2 brand new Fabia Mk3's had problem after problem with engines and gearboxes causing me to reject one of them. The issues could not be fixed according to Skoda and they were substantial. Cost me a shed load of money because the quality of the cars has dived over the last 3 years as is shown by JD Power. I've been involved in diagnosing several issues for owners on here over the last year. I'm gutted it went that way as I've had Skoda's for near 12 years and loved them. However, I now run 2 2018 Citroen C3's and they are faultless. Not a single issue has surfaced, no adjustments needed, no faults, just nice quiet smooth power. No rattles or creaks either. Covered huge mileages over the last 8 months (3,500 miles per month) without a single issue.

Anyhoo...don't worry, once fixed it should be fine. The 3 cylinder engine is not a bad unit compared to the 4 cylinder unit 1.2 110ps engines I had. The 3 cylinder unit is in my opinion the last of the good engines made by VAG for the time being. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

So car was new 1st week of March this year......1.0 95psi 3 cylinder engine.....Selecting 1st gear has become worse over the last 8 weeks......Reverse gear selection is only an occasional issue...….It's booked in at the dealership on Wed 1st to get fixed, hopefully now they have received the gearbox adjustment tool from Germany...…..1st time I reported it to the dealership, I was told, oh the Fabia's do have that issue but it will get better after a 1000 miles on the clock...…...Obviously I wasn't prepared to put up with that, hence why 8 weeks later it's still ongoing...…..The 1st time it went in to the dealership, they said, nothing wrong with the gear box, it's all good...….So later that day after I took one of their service engineers for a drive, who straight away said....OHHH!  I see what you mean.....So fingers crossed it will be fixed after Wednesday

It may just be adjustment with your gearbox as the tech is suggesting. With gearboxes they take much longer than the engine to 'break-in'. Most dealers don't like to mess with a gearbox until at least 3-5k miles has been put on the car, unless the issue is very pronounced. Often an annoying issue such as poor gear selection can go away as the miles build and the box runs in. If not then a remedy can be sort. The issue with the 6spd gearboxes is poor reverse gear selection, and later progressively poor 1st gear selection. The condition just gets worse and worse until early failure. The main issue is the idler gear which comes in between 1st and 2nd gear. The idler gear and a shim are replaced, but often it needs new 1st and reverse gears too as the problem damages those gears. It may be worth you mentioning to the garage you are aware of a TPI for the 6spd gearboxes and asking if it covers the 5spd unit as well. I've only dealt with the 6spd units.  Over the last 12 months I've been to look at, and adjust 5 of the 6spd gearboxes in Fabias. All of them needed the gearbox stripping down to replace parts with the repair pack. All done under warranty. Yours will be too of course so don't worry, it'll be fine!

Maybe it was used in the current ad? 1:51, there's a bunch of people standing on Skoda roofs. Skoda UK, should I take it from this advertisement you are saying that the roof can support the weight standing, singing adults? (Yes that is me moaning in the comment.)

Don't understand  why the ad guys come up with such ideas to encourage the local yobs to muck about on car roofs - you can't watch it 24/7.

I suppose car wash damage from overhead brushes  is possible, but it sounds as though you are washing by hand ??  I have heard stories of transporter damage, the first place I looked when I took delivery of the Citigo was the roof, and gave it a good viewing.

Once the headlining has to come out they are easily prone to fingermarks when refitted ,so check that out before you take acceptance of the repair.......hope it goes OK

  • 4 weeks later...

I am a PDR guy and have been for over 25 years, there is nothing hard for a decent dent guy with that damage, may not even need to drop the head lining to get a tool in. Bodyshops hate us guys that can do work like that, although the clever one's will use us and bill up a lot more.

Well the good news is that it has been sorted...….Skoda UK paid for suggested body shop of the dealer to work on the issue...….They completed an excellent job...….The Bodyshop manager explained that after they'd released the head lining they noticed two of the support struts were bent, but they got in their dent specialist who completed three hours of work and now the roof is looking good with no defects that my untrained eyes can see 👍
