Reattaching door mirror glass

Featured Replies

In an amazing piece of luck the near side door mirror glass just fell out of the casing when the door was closed. However, instead of falling to the ground and breaking, it came to rest against the top of the door. I think today's heat finally got the better of it. Anyway, its not at all obvious how it was ever attached in the first place. There's no trace of glue or sticky pads. Does anyone have any recommendations for reattaching this? Superglue? 3M pads? Obviously, needs to be able to withstand the hot weather (on the three days we have it).

Cheers and thanks in advance - Stuart

UPDATE: On closer examination, the glass has come away from a mirror-shaped black flexible "pad". I'm not sure whether this is the heater element for the mirror or simply the means by which the glass was attached to the component that moves inside the case (and contains the heater element?).

I had always assumed that the heater element was integrated in the glass like it was on my XJ40 model Daimler but this definitely doesn't appear to be the case.

Glass fell out of the wing mirror on my insignia while driving along at 60mph... i have know idea how, but it got sucked/pushed in by the wind towards the window and i was able to retrieve it...

Sounds like the Same set up as the octy, plastic mounting plate, them the heater element, then glass.

I took off the mounting plate, cleaned both faces with some multi surface cleaner, then used some thinnly beaded tec7 on the back of the glass and clamped them in place overnight before reattaching. Tec7 isnt cheap, but.. it can be applied underwater and still works, and is ridiculously grippy and strong.

had a similar situation with a mirror on my yeti, I just used black mastic(gutter repair stuff), a thin coat, its still there after 12 months, and the heater still works without probs

It was a Sika flex product, can't remember the code,  a trip to your local diy store might help, i'm old enough to remember black bostik, something like that!

I had the same issue on my Octy2 and did a write up on it. Simply put, I used double sided tape to reattach the glass to the backing plate. The plate was removed from the car checking you unplug the cables carefully.

Was easier to work on this off the car then click it back in place when done.

I used spray contact adhesive. A very little on both surfaces iirc. Worked a treat.

I used double sided carpet tape, it was too hand and saved opening a Sika cartridge as it would have rapidly gone off and been wasted.

In the end, I bought a 10cm x 20cm section of 3M double-sided tape as a kit from ebay with wipes and blades for £4.20. Pricier than some options I guess but I haven't worried once about it falling off again!

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
