Superb DSG Failure

Hi Guys

the 6 sp DSG in my 2010 Superb combi is failing.. Skoda are telling me it is most likely going to need a complete gearbox replacement !!

symptoms - sometimes fails to engage reverse and can be "jerky" on take off, but now its also noisy.

any advise on options or costs?

Has the gearbox fluid been changed at required mileage or every 4 years (so should have been changed at least twice by now), how long (and what mileage) since last fluid change

 

I would be seeking an opinion from a member of Fed auto (or another auto gearbox specialist)  they can sometimes repair parts of a gearbox rather than change whole unit.  But still not a cheap job

If you are lucky and have caught it early enough, a fluid change might fix problem for a while, but clearly some long term worn parts

I don't own the car from new...I think it had one dsg oil change but when i went to change dsg oil i was advised there is no point in changing the oil as the fault was present

i understand 6sp dsg issues are not unusual, is that true ?

Yes i plan on getting it looked at by a gearbox specialist also.

The 6sp unit is generally considered reliable. It's the 7-speed dry clutch type in the 1.6 TDI and the 1.8 TSI that has problems. The DSG fluid and filter must be changed every 60000 km: if this has not been done it could cause problems. If the service book has been kept up to date it should show this work as having been done.

 

I would find a specialist and get a diagnosis from them before going any further. I wouldn't bother with getting a replacement from Skoda unless they're going to give a decent warranty on it.

The 6 speed can be very reliable if serviced regularly. Mine has done 191,000 miles, and always had the oil and filters changed at the right intervals. 

Only fault has been the flywheel, which I changed about 5,000 miles ago. 

 

A friend had a very similar problem to yours and it was repaired without replacing the box. I'll drop him a message, find out what was done and post back in the thread. 

All I do know is that it wasn't cheap. Cost him around £1600 all told.

The DSG with an Oil change interval is @ 40,000 miles or sooner, not every 4 years.  Never has been every 4 years.   (Haldex was 40,000 miles, then 30,000 now every 3 years.)

 

Audi say the S-tronic (DSG with a fancy name.) Oil change is @ 38,000 miles.

The imperial intervals are rounded up from the metric equivalents: 60000 km is ~37,300 miles, so they've rounded off to 40000 miles for the UK. It looks Audi are imposing a slightly stricter limit than the others.

 

Because of this, most distance-based UK service intervals are a bit longer than the metric intervals used everywhere else.

Audi did it because of actions in the USA.   Faults....

Audi charge more for a F when a TFSI is a TSI and really nobody gives a F.

 

Skoda has v added to RS for the UK supposedly because of Ford / RS, and Porsche / Audi / Renault seemed not to give a F.

There is logic in changing if the gearbox is out anyway and would soon need doing, as not having to remove twice.   There is quite a lot of time involved which is labour charge

 

However mileage is not a good indicator for clutch pack wear, a car that has spent all its life in a traffic clogged city like London is going to have had considerably more gear changes than a car which has spent most of its life cruising down empty roads.   It is the kind of thing that the auto gearbox expert will have to give an opinion on, and might only be able to do accurately once it is when disassembled and can check how worn.   Its the sort of thing where need to ensure the parts are easily available when work starts, but might not be needed.

 

Sorry no idea on costs

 

 

You need to find out what i wrong with it first.

Then once that is diagnosed and you know who is doing the job they are the ones that should know the cost of what needs doing.

I drove it on a longer spin yesterday and now i think the noise might just be a rear wheel bearing .... :blush:

That cant be the reason for the 'Sometimes fails to engage reverse' & can eat beef jerky or whatever. 

 

Great idea to have it checked out and see if an issue up front and another at the rear. & with Someone that knows what they are looking at.

yes there is still a gearbox issue and that hasn't changed, I'm getting a second opinion on the gearbox issue. but its good the gearbox symptom hasn't changed.
