Lazy Gearbox

Featured Replies

Is it just me or does anybody else find the DSG 7 Speed Gearbox on the 2019 2.0 TDI 150's very jerky (at low speeds) and a little slow to react. It seems to really cling on to the gear your in before changing up. Even in semi auto (because it still won't let you change up until its ready to do so anyway) Seems to have a little bit of a lurch also when changing up.

Overall I'm a little disappointed with the gearbox be fair.

Anybody else know what I mean. It can't just be me, can it??

Have just (one week ago) got a new 2 litre diesel 150 with the 7 speed DSG.

I don’t have the same issues re jerkiness, in fact I said to Swmbo yesterday when we were out that the changes are imperceptible and you only knew about the change as the display on the dashboard changes.

I agree that maybe it doesn’t always use same gear as I’d naturally choose, but I don’t worry about that. For example, It rarely seems to use D7 but is still in D6 when I’d be in top gear in a manual.

I also drive a Fiat Ducato based motorhome with comfortmatic (a kind of semi automatic type set up) and that does the same re choice of gear, but is noticeably less smooth on up changes than the DSG.

I suggest that you give the dealer a call and get it checked out.

edit - I generally drive in “normal” mode or “comfort” mode, maybe it might be more jerky in “sport”? Not tried it yet other than briefly to make sure it works.

Do they (the DSG 7 gearboxes) learn your driving style, and adapt over time???

But yes, if it's jerky, i would not be happy, and straight back to the dealer.

None of the gearboxes learn your driving style or adopt over time :-)

@Nick_H  So people say, but when you have had a few and driven plenty you know that is not correct.

You can drive them, get used to them and lend them to someone that drives it and you get it back driving like crap.

Like many Motoring Journalist review DSG,s or like a Used car / Hire car acts until it changes to your driving style.  Not an internet myth.

You can Reset the DSG, or just drive dynamically as described in the Owners Manuals and then have your car / dsg back as you like it.

No probs  I bow down before your extensive experience

Maybe others here are also experienced or just drive DSG's as you do and have experienced how different drivers can have a DSG adopt their driving style,

and that can be changed with another driver.

There are threads over the years about it on this and other forums, and then people will link the 'technical stuff'.

I'm not convinced. I posted on a thread a while back and someone said yes they do and said they would post lots of technical stuff that never appeared. I have to say however i'm no 'vehicle techy' and this is my first DSG. I thought as you did that the gearbox was somehow smart and picked up on your driving style. I then did a load of research and found nothing to suggest it did and a fair bit to suggest it didnt.

I know one thing for sure if the DSG was smart it would probably call me a #### before every trip !!

Me neither; for the simple reason that there's no obvious (to me) way of the gearbox electronics getting feedback about how well it's doing at matching what you want it to do.

Not like you can pat it on the head or feed it a biscuit when it behaves in a way you like.

An SSP here that doesn't mention anything about the gearbox learning the driver's 'driving style' as far as I can see on a quick skim read: http://www.volkspage.net/technik/ssp/ssp/SSP_308.pdf

One might think they'd make a big deal of it if it had some sort of artificial intelligence.

Not rocket science or even AI.

Take a misbehaving DSG / jerky one, do a reset and drive it and there you will be, see how it drives after you take it for a bit of a road test.

There is even the Kidology where a tech plugs in and checks the DSG, does nothing, takes it for a bit of an Italian' / Country road tune-up and hands it back to the owner and says see how that behaves.

That's not it learning your driving style though it's just it recalibrating itself.

Fair enough, learning or Recalibrating or calibrating to the settings.

DQ200's 'Dynamic Shift Programme' Just in D the DSG behaves the way you want it to for getting a shift on and then reverts back to its more fuel efficient shift patterns.

I don't think it's worth taking it to the dealer / approved garage. I think I'm being picky. It's very smooth under acceleration I'm talking about slower speeds. I think I'm just not used to it as it's my first auto.

However it does seems to hang a while before changing up.

@Kirksherratt I wouldn't think of myself as being picky if i had just bought a new vehicle and the gearbox was "very jerky" at any speed, high or low.

It shouldn't be jerky.

Or has it sorted itself out now????

It just feels at low speed when you are coasting you definitely notice the down change from 3rd to second and the only lerching feeling seems to be from 2nd to 3rd. The rest of the gears seem to be okay.

Do you find it hangs a little too long on the revs before changing up? (unless in ACC Eco mode that is)
