Question about VRS Sport mode

Featured Replies

Hi

Does anyone know the difference between the two ways of entering Sport mode on the VRS DSG?

The 'proper' way is to use the driving mode selector button, but the quickest way is to toggle the gear stick down to the sprung position while in D.  This puts it into S, the engine noise goes all raspy, and the current gear shows as 'S5' or whatever in the instrument cluster, but in the Infotainment screen it still shows the previous driving mode (e.g. Normal) and the door lighting doesn't change colour like it would if you used the mode selector.  So is the gear stick method only activating part of the full Sport mode?  (Full meaning adjustments to steering, DCC, acceleration, diff, ACC, etc.)

ta

The gear selector only changes the gearbox into sport, the infotainment will change all the other things at the same time.

& it changes the throttle response

That's tied to the gearbox mode though anyway isn't it?

That is to say, I don't think you can put the DSG into sport without the throttle response changing with it, nor the other way around?

Useful when cruising in comfort mode and you want to do a quick overtake. Sadly it brings on the daft noise, which in my case meant an annoying dashboard rattle!

Thanks everyone. Yes it sounds like it's most useful for a quick overtake or get out of trouble manoeuvre.

Personally I'd use the paddles to override the current gear for an overtake or to get out of trouble.

Pull back into sport mode, push left into manual (with sport throttle) pull back again to drop a gear. Sounds complicated but, done a couple of times & its second nature

The DSG will always kick down into a lower gear to give you maximum power if you floor the throttle, even in M-mode. Useful to know.

Except that in the diesel, it simply gives you maximum revs sometimes and not a lot of power...

frustrating.

There's not a lot of power at 4000+ rpm in the TDI, even with a remap. I believe the DSG can be remapped to prevent kickdown in manual mode though.

Ok perhaps it will rev way beyond max torque in the diesel engine. But still, better than bogging in a high gear when you need emergency power, and perhaps you're too preoccupied to be trying to remember what mode you are in.

Sounds like the bracket for the speaker is incorrect from factory. I would check on it to see if it stops the rattle.

Bracket was all checked. Ive turned it off completely now, no more problems!

The main problem with the diesel/dsg combo is the shift points are way out in both D and S. D is way too early taking you well under usable torque (not always a bad thing for economy) and S revs far too high and when shifting up it takes you into the middle of the torque band then out the top.

I've done the throttle mod which helped loads but is still not perfect. With the tuning box currently fitted it is closer to being right where the higher revs in S actually offer usable power. A proper map would help.

You mention switching D to S on the lever brought on the daft noise.. doesn't in mine when I do this in normal - I use the gearbox lever switch all the time now as sport works so much better at slower speeds in terms of consistent less laggy throttle response and for me means the car responds closer to how I feel it should 'go' wise. Only get the daft noise in Sport Mode which I never use because of the daft noise and personally not keen on the heavier steering for no gain in feel at all (electric rack means no feel full stop).

So I use Individual which for me is sport with VAQ Sport, normal steering and eco noise set.

I only ever use normal or individual modes now.

@Scotty72 I don't know if it makes any difference but I have DCC so Id be driving in comfort mode and setting the box to sport mode, which brought on the sound generator. So it had to go.

Now sport mode is the same as how I set up my individual mode on my old VRS so I have a completely spare profile in the individual mode on the new car.

Maybe the DCC does make the difference, interesting that it would add the sound with a gearbox mode only though still.

@scotty72 yeah it was a bit annoying to be honest. The generator would make a buzz at a certain RPM (around about 2.5k) which when in sport mode it wouldnt get that low in the revs, so it was only the other modes affected. Dealer wanted to remove the dash so turning it off was the best option. I had considered ramping it up in 10% increments to see what happens but I cant really be bothered. A lot of people havent believed me that it made the noise just off the box too!
