DIY Service

Featured Replies

Evening,

I was was wondering if there is a complete guide to performing your own minor service?

I have a a VRS which I get serviced every 10K miles/1 year. It’s a 220 TSI DSG (2013)

Im thinking of doing this myself now to save a bit of money, I plan on keeping my car when the finance is up which isn’t long away.

Is is there a comprehensive list of tools needed or can someone help?

I would like know:

Oil Litre Capacity after draining

Nut size to remove oil filter

Replacement Sump Plug part no or where to source

Sump plug tool

Any other parts needed

Cheers,

Stu

A metric socket set with torx bits, plus a torque wrench to make sure anything you take off is as tight as it should be. Halfrauds socket sets are very good. Plus keep your receipt as they have a lifetime warranty which they do honour.

Parts can be found on the likes of eurocarparts. Give a ring to any motor factors and they'll know what you need.

I'd invest in a set of ramps so you're able to get under the car that bit easier. It's also that bit safer than trying to use a couple of jacks and axle stands.

Only major thing you'll need is a device of some descript to reset the service time. OBD11 device or VCDS will do the trick.

Any idea about the sump plug?

not sure mate. That's where having a butchers in a motor factors comes in.

I'm sure there's a workshop manual for our cars..........I'm struggling to find it. That would be a good starter for you

Thanks  Nige

Hi Stu, it appears you may have the same car as me (EA888 rev3 CHHB engine), so I believe this is the sump plug you require would be this one and of course you will need the removal tool which can be purchased here.  I have to admit, I have yet to do my own oil service on my vehicle but being old school I like to change my oil every 6000 miles. On my old Mk2 Octavia I had a quickvalve fitted, but unfortunately at the present time, having emailed them, they are not available for the Mk3 TSi. Hope this helps.

Hey,

Ive ordered all the bits I need apart from the removal tool. Online and looking at some guides it appears you can use a flat ended screw driver for removal so will do this.

Cheers!

I'm sure my sump plug on my 2.0d is a bolt, not torx.  Also the service reset can be done through the settings on the head unit (certainly can on my Columbus)

It's a plastic sump plug in the TSI I believe and needs to be changed at every oil service.

Aah ok, must be different then

I generally do all my own servicing but as my Octavia is a lease car I won't be touching it. However, it's worth getting yourself on GSF and Euro car parts email list as they often have promotional deals such as 60% off.

No doubt someone will be in here slating off both these companies but their deals on recognised brands of engine oil (of the correct grade) are often well worth having.

I will be the one that slates them then :D

e.g 5 litres of shell Helix HX8 is listed at a ridiculous £66.99 and with the bank holiday discount you get that down to a more reasonable £36.84.

Ebay are selling Qantum delivered to your door for £25.

Case closed.
