Fitting Thule 591 Proride to roof bars

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm having trouble finding a suitable pair of reasonably priced wing/aero roof bars for the above cycle carriers and my S3 estate.

I've tried both offerings from Lidl - the Menabo Brio at £30 and the Menabo Tiger xl at £50. The former uses an incompatible, smaller T-track system than Thule's 20mm T-bolts, and the carrier aslo seems to have 11mm slot lugs which are too big to locate into the Tiger XL's 6.8mm slots.

The carrier fits with no issue to my genuine Skoda Octavia hatch roof bars (which btw are for sale), but finding a match that isn't an overpriced Thule option for my S3 estate is proving difficult.

I like the look of the Cruz Airo r bars,  but can't find any information about the T-track dimensions anywhere in their documentation.

Suggestions, anyone?

Cheers,

Fr0d

I have always found this company very helpful. They have lists of roof bars (and snow chains) tailored to each vehicle, and if you need to contact them they respond quickly and professionally.

Thanks for the link, I've visited that site previously, as they sell airo bars.

I'll look into it.

Not much help but I would be interested in what you find, I have some prorides with the t attachment and am thinking of getting some bars for when I get my superb. I have been looking at second hand on eBay for Thule wingbars but still expensive.

Surely you don’t need WingBars?? Just get a used set of AeroBars. How much does a pair of WingBars cost in the UK? £130 here in NZ for the WingBar Edge, a fair price for the quality if you ask me.

I have Yakima Whispbar (through bar) which I originally purchased on my previous car which can take 2 carriers and a box quite easily.  These accept 591 Proride and have the same t-track system used by Thule and are inter-changeable  with other vehicles via 'foot packs' specific to car model.    They look good and are very quiet when fitted on their own, however I find that getting the 591 on/off is PITA, due to rubber seal across the width of the bar, so they tend to stay on which affects noise and economy, albeit minimal.  I have a single Yakima Front-Loader carrier which is way better than 591, but won't take a winter bike with fixed guards.

If you change vehicles reasonably often you could argue these are 'reasonable', as the foot pack cost is minimal when you change.  If the S3 is a keeper though, I would invest in the Thule to match the carriers,  aesthetically much nicer to look at also.
