Views on the DSG and engine combination

I am still on the look out for the right vRS Estate, having extended my current Yeti lease to give me more time, my Yeti currently has a 1.2 engine combined with the DSG and works really well, but its a lease car that will not be kept beyond warranty, read so many DSG horror stories, I had a DSG on my 2005 A3 2.0Tdi, and that was ok after 84K, however it did feel to sometimes struggle to find the right gear at the most critical times like pulling away at roundabouts, you could say it hesitated alot. On the Yeti with a petrol engine its alot better, not perfect but better, so I think in combination with a petrol engine it is better suited. Doing around 10k miles per annum I have settled on a petrol vRS (I think the days of sporty cars with Diesel engines are going to be a distant memory in the next few years).

 

So what are the newer DSG boxes like on th FL petrol Octavias, would you keep beyond the warranty? I am still thinking of leasing an Octavia in which case its DSG, but If I do buy for the longer term would a manual make more sense.

 

Got details of a leasing deal yesterday, 245 Estate vRS DSG 8k miles per annum, 36 months £296 pm no deposit, or £316 pm for the challenge on same terms, really tempted by this or buy a nearly new manual for £20.5k....or brand new via broker for £22k Decisions Decisions

I am also thinking of upgrading to a vrs 245 estate with the dsg box.  From whay i have  read the 6 speed box on the 2.0l tsi is more reliable than 7 speed that is in the diesel.  

Horror DSG stories with 7 speed Twin Dry Clutch DQ200 DSG's has nothing to do with the 7 Speed Wet Clutch DSG as in the Octavia vRS.

 

Nothing to do with the 6 speed  DSG's from a decade or more past.

2.0 TSI & 7 Speed DSG a perfect marriage.

 

It takes time to know how reliable the 7 Speed Wet Clutch DSG's are.

You do not know about reliability after 3 years old until there are ones 3 years old, or 4 or 5 years old.

Done about half a million miles with VW DSG boxes split fairly equally between the DQ250 wet 6 speed and the DQ200 7 speed dry.

 

Disliked the 6 speed wet generally except with when it was an option against the 5 speed manual so the 6 speed DSG was nice.  More to buy, makes fuel consumption worse or no better than manual.

 

7 speed good and even great in the latest form with coast program ie it pops both clutches and hence I am getting around 56 mpg on my 1.4 TSI 150 hp Octy.  No 40k oil service either.

 

The all get a bit confused in busy town driving so best to stick it in Sports mode when in busy part of town.

 

7 speed wet is a much better box I gather than the 6 speed wet but would surprised if VW have totally sorted the confusion they get in to where it seems to take a full second to sort it self out which can be frightening.

DSG + TSI in a VRS are great together. If buying brand new you should be able to extend the warranty to 5 years if preferred, or if not buying new you should be able to take the Skoda insured warranty once manufacturers one has run out.

 

Bottom line is the box in the VRS is fairly reliable as long as serviced correctly to schedule and I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Had a DSG on my Mk2 FL vRS TSi and again on my current vRS TSi. Excellent experience on both - made me wonder why I stuck with a manual box all these years!

I'm on my first ever auto/dsg car in over 30 years of driving manuals. Whilst that last bit of control/feeling of being in total control isn't there with DSG for 99% of road driving I do its perfect and effortless. I just make use of Sport mode at slower speeds because it removes the programmed in delays with throttle and gearbox waking up when I want the car to respond at junctions or pulling out or away from roundabouts etc. Overall driving experience would be better in a manual but thats not why I got an Octavia, its a family brisk barge :)

I've owned owned/run nine DSG's covering many 100k miles.

 

All my wet clutch boxes have been faultless. Four out of Five dry clutch have required warranty work.

 

In my opinion I would not own a dry clutch out of warranty.

 

So that's anything under 2.0litre will have a DQ200 7 speed dry clutch.
