Manual Open/Close Electric Tailgate?

Featured Replies

I think this got lost to some degree in my "first thoughts" thread so am re-posting as I'd be keen for thoughts/experience from everyone

So, this last week identified another "issue".

When you have the electric tailgate, is there any way of opening/closing it manually?  i.e. not powered?

1 - if you want to try out to see if something in the boot is going to fit without catching the glass/trim, it's useful to be able to lower the tailgate by hand - in this case it was a garden chair that needed to be returned and I didn't want the leg going through the glass.

2 - if you're in a car park with a low ceiling height, you don't want the tailgate just wazzing itself straight up!

Had to do some hanging on to stop the tailgate in the 2nd scenario!  And also noticed if you try to pull it down it starts moving under its own steam.  Cue lots of beeping because I was stopping it - it didn't sound very happy at the manual intervention

Best way to deal with either is to open / close the tailgate but to press the close button on the underside when you want it to stop.  You can also set its open height by opening the tailgate, pressing the button to stop it from opening at your preferred height, then pressing and holding the tailgate to save that height.

I've had no need to manually open or close, but would be interested to find out (a) if it's possible, and (b) whether it would damage the mechanism at all.

I have the same question because I don’t want to decapitate my dog. These boards don’t seem nearly as busy as the Alfa Romeo one I used to frequent.

When it's closing you can just push the button by the numberplate and it'll stop. However it closes so slowly and can even be upset by a stiff breeze, I'm not sure it's got enough power to pop the glass?

Pushing the interior button when going up does the same to stop it hitting an object above the car.

Top tip, if the boot is really crammed: if you shove down on the lid as it hits the soft close latch, it'll help it lock without getting upset. The modern equivalent of throwing the last thing in and slamming the door really quickly!

If yours is being delayed and stopped by a stiff breeze I’d say your struts are failing. Mine has the power to pop your limbs off if you put them in the way. It would definitely smash the rear glass if given the chance

That was a little bit of hyperbole on my part 😉 I do find the anti-pinch mechanism to be effective, though not tested with one of my own limbs!
