Idiot's guide to map updates. (Idiot can't find it!)

Featured Replies

Someone on here went to the trouble of writing a superb, step-by-step guide on how to up-date Amundsen maps. It was ideal for the terminally non-techy, like wot I are, so I bookmarked it for future use.

Now I want to do an update but, following a computer problem, a lot of my bookmarks have disappeared, inevitably this one amongst them.  I have searched the forum endlessly but cannot find this particular post which, if I recall correctly, was part of a long thread on the subject.

Hopefully, because it was such a comprehensive guide, others may have bookmarked it too . Please can anyone point me towards It?

Thank you for taking the trouble to respond.  I'm fairly sure the post that I recall is contained in that thread.  I note that it is a currently active thread, so why the hell I couldn't find it for myself is beyond me!

Anyhow, thanks a lot.

1. Go to the Skoda update portal, download the file ECE A1 2019/2020 for 32Gb only.

2. Save it to your computer HDD and once downloaded, insert the SD card (it does not matter if it's 16Gb) with the old maps on into your card reader and then copy (save) the old contents in a new folder called Maps Old (just in case).

3. Format the SD card in FAT32 and 4096 bytes.

4. Once you have done that, then just unzip the new maps from the ECE A1 file directly onto the now blank SD card and then once complete, tell the computer to "Eject it" so that you can remove it safely and then insert the card back into the sat nav.

5. Job done.

You don't strictly need to do step 3 in your list, you can just delete the contents.

Thanks for that.  I think I've got a good idea of what to do now.  On my usual form with anything  techy it's still 50/50 that I screw up!

All you need to do is make sure that you set the SD card as the place you want your zip/unzip software extracts the maps to. And it's job done.

Whilst I acknowledge what Kenai says in that you don't need to copy the old maps back to the computer, however as I see it, if there's an issue with the new ones, then it's quite easy to just copy them back and your not left with no mapping at all.

No, I said step 3. You don't need to reformat the card, you can just delete what was already on it.

Definitely back up what was already on there, which you included in step 2.

WhooHoo!  I've only  gone and dunnit!

My genuine thanks to you guys, and to all those whose past posts on the relevant threads I printed out and carefully followed. A couple of hours in front of the pooter, but at the end of it I have the latest maps installed.

It's probably old hat to most on here but, honestly, I am the kiss of death to techy stuff. Give me some spanners and, preferably, a big 'ommer and I'm yer man. But anything techy, I am guaranteed to screw it up. Can't believe it worked out so well.

Many thanks to all concerned.

A quick format is usually faster than deleting the contents B)
