Reversing problem when towing

Featured Replies

Might be thick (more than likely) but when trying to reverse for the first time when towing the Karoq kept slamming the brakes on. This was unexpected and happens quite violently, making me think I’d hit something. Am I missing something here? Is there a way of disabling the reversing auto braking when towing?

Factory tow bar or aftermarket..?

Do you have a factory fit, dealer fit or other aftermarket tow bar and electrics?

Yes, there’s a ‘tick’ to remove in the ‘Parking Settings’ on the media screen.

But you shouldn’t have to if it has been coded correctly.

True, but the OP asked if it can be disabled in some way........and it can.

The OP just has to hope that that’s the only bit of coding that’s been omitted and that the stability control and other safety systems have been coded correctly  for when towing 😳

The OP was asking about a after-market tow bar last year.........

Sounds like the car needs to go back to the aftermarket tow bar fitter to be properly coded.

The incentives for opting for a factory fitted towbar seem to be getting greater as modern cars get more complicated.

Hi guys. This was a Skoda dealership fitted towbar, fitted as part of the sale for half the normal cost. I’ve only had this vehicle for just over a month, and the first time out with a trailer came as a shock when the brakes slammed on when reversing. Didn’t have the problem with my previous two Octavias but they didn’t have the same auto braking system. I’m due to take the trailer out tomorrow, so I’ve already followed your method described to disable the auto braking, fingers crossed. Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help.

If you did want to go through the hassle of getting the dodgy coding resolved, then having had the tow bar fitted at the main dealer will help you. The dealer will have farmed the job out to a third party tow bar fitter.

As you dealt wit the dealer, rather than directly with the third party fitter then the responsibility lies with the dealer to resolve the coding issues.

Out of curiosity what makes you say that?

I appreciate not all dealers do, but when it comes to third party (aftermarket) tow bars, then purely from the information posted on here over the years it is clear that most dealers employ a local tow bar fitter.

It isn't clear if the tow bar is an aftermarket or genuine OEM tow bar. If its OEM then this would be more likely to be fitted in-house.

Either way the coding isn't correct, and the main dealer is responsible for correcting it.

Agreed.

When I was at the dealer we only fitted genuine tow bars and associated wiring. Fitting of aftermarket parts invalidates the vehicle warranty, but if a dealer has those parts fitted you could then argue that they are then liable for any following concerns.

Used the tow bar last week and after taking your guidance re the manoeuvre braking, all was well with no reversing issues. Thanks everyone.
