Brand new 1.5 DSG not Superb at all

Featured Replies

I transferred my pedal box from my previous car into my petrol 220 sportline 6 months ago and it totally transferred the throttle response. Luckily for me, it was compatible with my engine ( DTUK pedal box ) so didn't cost me a penny more.  Driving in individual mode and setting the cruise control to sport as suggested above will also make an improvement in cruise control acceleration.

Definitely sounds like a pedal box is the answer. I was quite disappointed with the throttle response on my 190 diesel. It just felt lazy out of junctions for example. I know people argue about pedal boxes and there are those that say just press the pedal harder...all I can say is I took the plunge and I’m happy with the result. The throttle response in perfect now - just how you want it to be rather than lazy and unresponsive.

I'm ok with it now.  I noticed that I get severe wheelspin away from a junction in the wet.  Does a pedal box make this more likely?  I make sure that I get the car rolling gently and then floor the accelerator if someone is approaching fast.

The cruise control seems to accelerate a little quicker too, whether because I changed the setting to sport or something else I don't know.  I was speaking to a friend who has a Ford Galaxy and he said he sets the motorway speed to 73mph.  I said I set mine to 72mph.  Turns out we both do it for the same reason  - it accelerates ok up to a few mph less than the limiter and then crawls the final few mph, which is a bit embarrassing if someone is coming up behind you doing 70mph.

The other aspect that has improved is the creep.  It was zero when I first got the car but now it gently accelerates as soon as you take the brake off, like a traditional auto.  When I am trying to turn into my driveway, up a slight slope, between two brick pillars, with the sensors howling a warning that I'm only inches away from a wall (I know, I can see it, so I turn the park sensors off now for this maneuver), I found it very hard to edge forward a few inches - you had to hit the accelerator and then immediately slow or stop the car again with the brake. Nerve wracking!  Now I can usually keep the car moving without touching the throttle and just regulate the speed with the brake.  Phew!

I know what you mean about wheelspin from junctions, mine does that too if I give it some. I put it down to a few things: it’s my 1st auto (DSG)...with a manual you get to know your car and feed the power in with the clutch, it’s a lump of a car for the front wheels to drag from a standing start, also a lot of people say the OEM tyres leave a lot to be desired. I will be changing to Michelin PS4s when mine wear down. I do sometimes long for 4x4 but once you’re moving things are generally fine.

Just my opinion but start stop with the DSG is just awful, especially on a diesel like mine. I hate the hesitation if you want to nip out of a junction quickly. I promptly disabled it on my car.

I don't find the pedal box makes the wheel spin any worse. The best way to describe it is to say the throttle response is normal like any other car rather than annoying and lazy. Low speed manoeuvres and parking are fine. I had my reservations but I’m glad I finally took the plunge, it’s much nicer to drive now. When I 1st got mine the gear changes seemed awful, I think the gearbox adjusts to your driving style so I suspect that’s why it has improved.

Turning off autohold will let the car creep and helps with parking. Although I’ve read that DSGs are more jerky than a traditional auto with parking manoeuvres.

Adaptive cruise control in sport is quite aggressive in mine, even comical! If it’s set to say 70 and someone in front is doing 50, once they move over the car doesn’t hang around! Only tried this mode a couple of times. In normal setting, like yours it takes a few seconds to gain those last few mph.

No issue at all with my 1.4 dsg estate, eco mode never restarts in E gear though once I’ve stopped and turned the ignition off.

Eco mode is horrible for throttle response so only for long motorway drives.

32k miles on in 7 months, still happy with the big white hearse
