Smoking in a demo

You’re familiar with the concept of an addiction? You might as well have just said the sky is blue.

FWIW not all smokers are like this. My gran (who lived with us) smoked almost until she died at 96 years of age (from dementia and old age) and she made sure she never smelt bad.

My wife also smokes but likewise, she doesn’t smell of it and never ever smokes in the house. Even if it’s pouring with rain she’ll go outside to have one because she doesn’t want the house to smell of it.

I’ve had colleagues who smoke, but don’t smell of it. It is possible to smoke and not smell bad from it, not everyone who smokes is a “dirty” smoker or selfish.

Thanks. Bang of self righteousness of that post, left a bad taste in the mouth. Everyone has their vices, no need to shout down from a high horse.

Lighting blue touch paper . . . .

While happy that the wrong has been admitted I see smokers as just ahead of dog owners as some of the most selfish people around.  Their addiction comes first.

I am  a non-smoker and have never smoked, my father used to, my mother stopped when my brother was born.  Smokers can't smell anything, especially themselves, but they inflict it on the rest of us.  I have moved queues in supermarkets to get away from, not the smell of a cigarette, but the smell of a smoker.  Similarly we have one at work and I avoid being anywhere near him.  I am sure my mother in law thought to the day she died (of lung cancer) that I didn't know she smoked because she never, ever,  smoked when I was present - what she didn't understand was that no matter how much air freshener she used or how often she decorated  the smell gave her away.

Seriously, if you smoke ask a non-smoking friend to be honest with you about what you smell like - and you won't like the answer.

First they came for the socialists...

Good luck on your journey @Greezy56.

Very good luck Geezy, its been 40 years for me and the addiction is as strong as ever hence why the smell gets to me so much. I think that cigarettes were £1.60 a packet then the same as a paint or a gallon of petrol was, and my Triumph Stag did 16 mpg with my heavy right foot costing me 10p a mile.

Sounds like they have gone up 500%, I know my earnings have gone up by more than that, and I'm guessing that a pint of beer is not £8 yet, been teetotal for a decade.

My Skoda costs 10 cts € per mile so less than 10p

I know i would not have got on the property ladder if I hadnt given up smoking, I will do the calculation later as to how much the addiction would have cost me the last 40 years, you could do the same by assuming that they will cost £40 a packet in 40 years time, I bet you it will equate to the price of a very desirable house in todays money!

I did a very rough guesstimate saying that a packet of fags cost £2 for the first decade, £4 for the second, £6 for the 3rd and £8 for the 4th, it came to £73000 which is 1.5 times the cost of my first house, the rental income from which allowed me to survive the first 10 years in France and complete the renovation of my hôtel.

So on that basis your calculation would be in the order of £292000 !!!!!!!!!

Someone worked out the average a smoker will spend on their habit during their lifetime and the figure was £45,000. My first house in 1997 cost £42,500, sold it 5 years later for £75,000. Nothing like property to make a few quid.

No fags today , saved 16 quid so far but its not easy , im a grump but really want to say goodbye to the hold. I hope though that im not a holier than though type about other smokers. I am sure there are worse addictions. At least my addiction plied many thousands of pounds of tax into the gov coffers.  Live and let live

 Stick with it.

After a several more days/weeks the benefits of not smoking will start to show and you'll be focussing on those rather than the cravings.  You could try putting the money you're saving in a glass jar so it's a visible benefit/reward?

I stopped smoking when I realised 20-30 a day wasn't a going to end well.  A hangover and not being able to stomach the smell of stale smoke on my clothes from the night before, was just the kick I needed.  July 1st 2000.  Never touched a ciggy since.  It wasn't easy but once I started to feel the benefits it made me more and more hellbent on giving up for good.

Oh and there's nothing worse than an ex-smoker!

Seem to have touched some raw nerves.

I never said we should shoot smokers and whilst I would strongly prefer that you didn't smoke I accept your right to do it where it is legal to do so.

It is illegal in shared enclosed spaces which includes cars used by people at work - i.e. because garage employees use them, demonstrators . . . . .

The risks you took were:

- cleaning bill

- charge for reducing the value of the car

- prosecution for smoking where it is illegal to do so.

Let's move this to a wider audience in GC.

'GC'?

Where you just posted in.

It would be an amazingly cool result if you were able to quit as a direct result of the mistake in the loan car, and the thread that you bravely started about it. :)

He'll certainly think twice about admitting his misdemeanours in public again. :x

A lesser man might. :D

Well done for trying to quit. Its very very hard, but its probably the biggest thing you can do for your health long term. Addiction is strong and hard to break, I worked for a while in Oncology and you'd often see people outside the treatment centre, smoking. Try not be disheartened even if you slip - just keep on keeping on trying to stop. Lots of support out there from GP, Pharmacy etc if you need it.

Save all that cash then spend it on coke and hookers !

I once would have said the same but there is something much much worse, an ex smoker ex drinker ex overweight unfit person 😧

Glad all is sorted to the satisfaction of all parties.

I can see why the dealer wouldn't be happy, as a non-smoker I wouldn't touch a car I knew had been smoked in.

I dislike the smell (but oddly quite like the smell of unburnt tobacco) and I think I'd be able to  smell it no matter what.

I stood on a cig butt once and brought it into the car with me, I was nearly gagging at the smell on that journey and it took a week before I couldn't smell it any more.

Ah but all those 'ex's' are a good platform to address the 'unfit' part

Haha, it's hilarious to me how precious some people are.

Anyway, rest at ease, there aren't many smokers left. We are all either dying and/or being discriminated out of existence.

You will find many of those smokers standing close to the doors of Scottish Airport Terminals.

It gives quite a welcome to visitors as they step out expecting a warm welcome and get their first wiff of what to expect as they get on public transport, walk past pubs, taxi ranks etc.

(Or it could be someone vapping at them.)

If you think it's precious to want to walk down the street without smelling the waste from your vice, consider this.

I have a vice too; I drink beer. It too results in a waste product. How would you feel if I stood on a table and emptied my bladder all over you?

Or Pepsi and Prop Forwards, depending on your preferences
