1.5 TSI DSG Throttle Lag

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I'm sure this topic has been covered before, I just thought it slightly easier to start a new thread rather than traipsing through older threads where info with lots of comments can get a bit lost.

I've had my Karoq 1.5 TSI DSG for nearly three months now and love it. However, more recently, or at least it's becoming more apparent, is the lack of throttle when I've not quite come to a complete stop and want to accelerate off again. I'm not talking about when Start / Stop kicks in, I know there is a slight delay on this due to the engine starting back up again. This is when you are slowing down to make a turn or approaching a roundabout and don't quite come to a full stop, you see it's clear and then need to accelerate quickly. There seems to be a delay of about 1-2 seconds from touching the accelerator to the car moving, and if I just floor it you get an awful sudden burst of speed that throws you back into the seat.

I've tried this in all of the Eco, Normal and Sport modes, Start Stop On and Off, and Auto Hold On and Off. It isn't putting me of the car at all however it is very annoying.

I imagine it just needs something altering on the ECU for the throttle response, is this something I can do myself or should I really be speaking to the dealership, although from previous threads I might just get the 'Characteristic' speech.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I think you need the software update....have a trawl through the thread

What gear is the DSG in when it does this? The DSG loves to hang around in 2nd which causes a bit of a lag. Every DSG I have owned has done this but its possibly made worse by the 1.5 and needs an update.

Driven DSG's for 6 years now so I am very used to the LAG in 2nd gear.

I have driven a Fabia vRS, my Karoq and an Audi V10 on a supercar driving day, covering a variety of age of car and they are all the same. I find now I can easily anticipate this and it isn't a problem at all.

I'm sure part of the reason is a first DSG, first auto for that matter and it is just a case of getting used to. However do you think it is worth mentioning to the dealer as it has become more noticeable?

'They' do not all do the same, and a 7 speed dry clutch DQ200 DSG is not doing the same as 6 or 7 speed Wet Clutch DSG IME.

As to the 1.5 TSI EVO & a DSG, that is a whole other story, and 'they' do not all behave the same as 'VW Group, Skoda, SEAT, Audi, VW use owner / drivers to do their R&D and be roadtest dummies.

Best let the Dealership & Skoda UK know there are issues, they will maybe say never heard of them with any 1.5TSI EVO, but then maybe this is their first day working at Skoda.

If it's really bothering you, yes, but I wouldn't be surprised if he says that is just how it is. You could also ask if you could take out another Karoq for a short test drive to see if that's the same.

I found I got used to it pretty quickly, the same as with the detail of how stop/start functions - some folks complain that cuts the engine at about 5 mph. Yes it does, but if you are breaking at the time then lifting off the break restarts the engine and you are ready to go by the time you are back on the accelerator. If you actually stop, then no problem. Maybe it is my old age but I have found the DSG box gives a much more relaxed style of driving - if you still want to be Lewis Hamilton then a manual or Sports mode is what you need.

With respect, they did all do the same. I have no idea whether they were wet or dry clutches, but when I got in and drove them, they all had a slight delay in pick up.

With respect i drive some long term like for years, and there are many that behave very differently.

Currently a 1.4TSI DSG and as 2.0TDI DSG and they are very different.  That is a 7 speed dry and a 6 speed wet.

I'm not trying to come across as complaining, far from it, I just wanted advice. I love the relaxed style of the DSG, and should I ever feel like Lewis Hamilton just floor it, it's plenty enough for me. I don't think I'd ever go back to a manual now.

Throttle lag seems to be getting a bit worse so rang dealer yesterday. Service guy Elliot at D M Kieth Bradford (dealt with in past), proper nice guy and was straight to tell me that Skoda know about the problem and there is an ECU update so all booked in for a couple of weeks! Fingers crossed it sorts the problem!

Did the ECU update solve the problem?

What octane fuel are you using? Originally I used 95 and experienced the symptoms you described. I now fill with the higher octane fuel and it has transformed the vehicle. The handbook says use a minimum of 95 octane but higher octanes may increase power. That is certainly my experience.

It will receive the necessary software update when it foes for its oil service..you may well notice a difference then.

@granty09 how'd it go?
