Oil Service Required 1000 Miles

Featured Replies

So i've just had the oil service message come up at around 63k miles .

I've owned the car for about 8 months and purchased on 56k.

From what I can tell it was last service at 55k miles in November , about a month before I bought it.

And Jan before that at 38k miles.

Should I be changing the oil or should I wait another 10k miles?

Has anyone had their oil and filter changed through Skoda?

I'm just looking for a rough cost is all. I called up and was quoted £189 which is I thought was a bit steep but being under the manufacturers extended  warranty assume i'm just going to have to suck up and pay for?

Many thanks

The rough cost you are looking at must be a minor service. @ at Skoda Dealership.    They do Oil / Filter Services for £119.

You do not say what engine you have so is it a TDI and got Long Life oil at the Service, if a Service was done for certain.

Or a TSI that maybe never got Long Life Oil so due changes every 9,400 miles / 372 days or sooner.

Why do you have to pay £189 under a Manufacturers Warranty, the Warranty says 'Servicing to manufacturers recommendations.

?

What service is actually due, what has been done previously?

If you are not sure what oil is in it, then assume oil needs changing

Might have long life oil, but if so why was the service indicator not set to variable last time

Thanks for the response, sorry about leaving a few things out.

It's a 2.0 TDI 4x4 Engine.

I phoned up and asked specifically for an oil and filter change based on the message that the car gave out and the figure he came back with was £189.

Sorry by the warranty bit , I meant the car is still under an extended warranty and I wondered if me performing the change would void the warranty on the rest of the car as I didb't get the "skoda service stamp".

I'm only going off the app unfortunately that tells me there was a service but not the details of it .

Might be best just phoning back up.

Many thanks again.

Yes that's the bit I can't really get my head around as it's alerting me at neither 10 or 20k miles since the last service, regardless of what the type of service was.

Strange.

Has the Haldex had an oil / filter change at 3 years?

If they are quoting £189 just to change oil and filter then find another dealer, this should be no more than £119. (and might be bit less)

sounds like it is advance warning of 9k miles since last change, giving you a chance to book something.

Most Likely No.

I dont think this includes an oil transmission change. Although I could be wrong.

I did think it sounded expensive.

However someone has pointed out a Haldex change. So there's a chance it includes for that, which then become more reasonable.

The issue is , if I go to a non-skoda garage I effectively void my extended warranty.

They've got me by the chestnuts I think.

Unlikely Haldex is included, that is another £79, and be sure that is the filter done not just oil change.

Then there is the brake fluid change, extra cost.

You do not void your warranty at a VAT Registered establishment / person using the correct OEM fluids and parts.

The £189 is the older price a lot of dealers charged for the 'interim service', which is the oil, oil filter and pollen filter. Seems your dealer is a little out of touch, or trying their luck.

The reason the car is asking for a service is because it's set to the 'fixed' interval... 12 months or 9,300 miles (15,000km), whichever is reached first.

Your annual mileage appears to be just over 12,000 miles. This puts you on the border for either fixed or variable (up to 24 months or 20,000 miles, the car decides for itself).

Personally I prefer fresh oil once a year, it's the life blood of any engine and turbo and a key contributor towards longer term reliability, so I'd stick to fixed.

How old is the car? If it's 3 years or older then your eligible for Skoda UK's fixed price servicing @ £119...

All Skoda engines, regardless of service interval, make, model or age are now serviced using VW507.00 oil, which is longlife, and therefore low ash / DPF friendly.

Dealers used to use their use of the "more expensive longlife oil" as an excuse for over charging for routine servicing. They can't get away with this anymore, all their oil is longlife; Quantum Longlife III...

I was un-aware of this. Thank you very much .

Worth contacting the usual garage then and seeing what they can do .

Cheers again.

It's a 16 reg so just over three years yes.

What what I gathered though there was a premium on the 4x4 cars.

By the looks of the comments I think I need to call them again and get to the bottom of this.

Many thanks for everyones input . Very helpful.

I'm not aware of any additional costs associated with vehicles equipped with 4x4, other than the required Haldex oil changes.

Note, the Haldex oil change is specifically called out under 'Maintenance', not 'Service', which makes your dealers argument for the 4x4 system affecting the fixed price servicing nonsensical...

image.png.7ee2f5f9cf4949f0a6a69673743ee465.png

It also isn't specifically called out in the T&C's, although note the last sentence "Further terms and conditions apply"...

image.thumb.png.f8dbd0ba30d851c09a97eb0538351893.png

We're talking an engine oil service here, which we all know is 5 litres of oil, an oil filter, sump plug and 30 minutes of labour.

If your dealer won't do it for £119, find one that will.

That's really cleared everything up for me.

Just an update for anyone who's in the same boat.

After speaking with the dealer again who wouldn't budge on the price i've booked it in with the mechanic I used before buying the Superb .

They're doing it for £70.

Result.

Thanks again everyone.

Very cheap giving the price of the oil, that’s over half of that.

Yeah they're very good on price.

We use them for our commercial fleet so they tend to offer personal stuff at a discount I think.

I booked mine in for service using the Skoda website.  My dealer honoured the Skoda pricing even though they said theirs were slightly higher as I'm a good customer of theirs...although I had a main / major service carried out with early DSG oil change and Haldex done as well (although that's a moot point because the pump had failed and was replaced under warranty so nothing to pay there...).

£70 is a wicked price!  Although, I may be wrong, but taking it to an independent will not get you any software updates due on the car or any recalls carried out.  Just a thought.

That's a good idea, booking online.

Luckily it's been in 3 or 4 times over the last 6 months and had various software updates in that time, some forced to fix underlying problems.

But definitely something to consider in future.

While it's under it's extended warranty I think i'll still use the main dealer wherever I can, they actually provide a very good service and often fix things for free that could arguable not be covered under the warranty type I have.

Given that the oil can be bought online in 5 litre tubs, delivered to your door for a little under £25 (as linked above), I'd imagine a 20 litre cube, or bulk drum will be even less.

£20's worth of oil on a £70 oil and filter service at an independent sounds about right, especially when a franchised Skoda dealer can do it for £99 (recently increased to £119).

Good point, however not everyone will want to buy their oil from e-bay (amid rumours of non genuine product sold cheaply, old stock and what not).

A couple of other examples for balance (carparts4less, pre discount code) attached.

Also a common misconception that all franchised dealers use Quantum oil, they all can sell it over the counter for sure, but that doesn't mean that's what they use in the workshop.

Even if you round up the oil to £30 as an average, £5 for a filter that's not a lot for labour let alone disposal costs and overheads, it's a good deal for sure.

True, there is a lot of counterfeit oil available online at attractive prices. a scary thought. I would only buy from trusted sellers i.e. franchised Skoda dealers, or as you've shown above Euro Car Parts etc.

My local dealer (Pulman Skoda in Durham) use Castrol in their workshop. I was once told though that Quantum was Castrol oil in a Quantum branded container, but then I also heard that it changed to Fuchs at some point.

Either way, it came from the technician himself that they only use VW507.00 for all their servicing, after I queried the use of VW508.00 in my Kodiaq.

It is indeed now Fuchs, confirmed by the Fuchs chap at Automechnika a few weeks ago. And yes they now do bulk 'Quantum' deliveries.

Some dealers do just use VW507.00 for simplicity, wasn't always such a good idea when the PD was about.

When I used to bulk order Castrol back in 2005(ish) we were paying less than £2 per litre for longlife, charged it out at about £13 I think. On every litre! Mind you we did order 5000L at a time.
