To buy or not to buy

Featured Replies

Am thinking of buying a car I saw today, good trade in for my car and good price for 2009 low mileage Superb 1.8TSE elegance which I really like the colour combination of with black inside plus wood inlay.

My current car, 2009 Octavia diesel, needs a cambelt and the abs/esp sensor fixing. Otherwise it's great, new tyres, new mot, and I know the history.

But the new car has wheels and tyres damage, the door handle is damaged, and it must have been used only locally to build up the wear that is evident.  If other repairs are as dodgy as the work on the wheels then I'd be concerned.  The paperwork is fine. Of course I don't know the history....

Any thoughts?  Spend money on my car or upgrade to a bigger and quieter Superb with half the mileage?

I'd walk away! Fix the Octy!

Check the threads for 1.8 petrol regarding oil consumption first.

Walk away, there are loads of good MkII Superbs out there, no need to buy a suspicious one.

Also, read this...

That's scary!

It took me months to find the spec I wanted, I just kept looking on Auto Trader and eBay as most are advertised on both. I was lucky to check the history of the ones I settled on and was able to bag a manual 4x4 CFGB with every extra bar the sunroof which I didn’t want with 38K on the clock, mint bodywork and wheels one owner, they are out there, just need to be patient.

I used to rush into buying cars, bought an S4 which looked mint, the dealer fitted a cam belt which snapped and when the owner got it back it never felt the same so sold it. Unknowingly I bought it and it felt flat and held back on the autobahn, I had vas  5052 connected to it and found one bank was running way too hot under full boost. Turns out they fitted a block and two heads during the repair, Bank 1 cylinder head for 1 to 3 was correct but bank 2 cyls 4 to 6 was for a normal 2.4 V6 with smaller valves, non sodium filled exhaust valves and different cam profiles!£@&££&£))))&@&!!!!! WTF??

The parts person had looked up the number for the S4 cyl 1-3 correctly which was right at the bottom of the V6 head list, for cyls 4-6 just picked the number directly below the S4 head  instead of scrolling all the way down to the bottom of the list for the S4 4-6 head. They look identical so the tech wouldn’t have noticed, but the customer certainly noticed the difference as did I. It was only having access to the records that I found the wrong part number for the 4-6 cyl head. Dealer would not fit the correct one, they ended up loosing their franchise not just for this incident but for others too.

So buyer beware, anything doesn’t look right now I just walk away.

I bought a new head at cost from Audi and fitted it myself then sold the car and bought a newer one with a better spec.

Personally I'd stay well away from the 1.8 and 2.0tsi before 2015MY.  Get a 3.6 instead 🤣

I've always been put off those due to the mpg and tax costs. Are the extra running costs not as high as they look??

Erm, well, er, well I use man maths to calculate these things and it doesn't come out too bad.
