General ride characteristics

Featured Replies

Just wondered what the general feeling is on the ride quality of the Karoq. On a smooth surface ( motorway, etc ) it is very good but I find it very jittery on rough surfaces and almost uncomfortable compared to my previous Octavia. I realise Skoda have had to stiffen the suspension to make it handle ( not roll ) as SUVs are higher, but I feel at the expense of ride quality. I have to cross an almost cobbled stretch to get into the local retail park and feel rather jostled in the process. I'd appreciate others views.

The other issue I have is the stop/start system which comes in all the time even before the engine reaches operating temperature. I have to drive 500 yds to turn round in the morning and as soon as I touch the brakes the engine cuts out. It restarts immediately I touch the accelerator but that is really annoying. I know I can switch the system off but it is so different to my Octavia and previous VWs where the engine would only cutout if it was up to temperature and all conditions were right. As my the car is going in for a couple of other things ( Oil consumption, noisy engine ( believed by dealer to be a software issue, and locking wheel nuts included ) I will ask if it can be adjusted.

Have you checked the tyre pressures aren’t too high, if the PDI hasn’t been done properly.

@Rockinghorse As above.

What was the tyre pressures when you collected the car and what have you set them to?

What actual tyres are on your car, brand and size?

Maybe just maybe the Transit Blocks have not been removed.  As it is if the locking wheel bolt socket is not there and the dealership is fitting new bolts.

or supplying a socket, have the Dealer Principal get the Master Tech to check your car to see the transit blocks have been removed.

PS

Nothing wrong with Stop / Start working before the Coolant gets to 90*oC or so, or the Oil gets to even showing 50*oC.

If the battery has power and the other factors that stops Stop / Start working nothing wrong with it stopping right after starting.

I have a 2.0 TDi SCR / DSG Seat that will stop / start even after starting in low temps if the interior temp setting is also set low.

Switching off when you get in and start is the thing to do if needs must, the system is not faulty.

Which wheels have you got fitted?

The 18" Braga, Mytikas, or the 19" Crater?

Thank you everyone who have replied. I have checked my tyre pressures several times over the last three months. They were set at 2.3 bar when I collected the car but I reduced them to 2.1 bar the next day in line with info on the petrol flap. My tyres are Bridgestone 215/50 R18 on the Braga wheels.

I haven't heard of transit blocks but I am sure they are not there as I have driven five up on several occasions and the ride was better with the extra weight.

Thanks for the info on the stop start, it's  just so different to all the cars I have driven including my 2017 Audi A4 company car. My only concern with the stop start is that I have worked with several people who have had to have new starter motors because of the stop start systems which over work the motors, so I was surprised that the Karoq has such a sensitive system. The fact that the engine temperature hasn't moved at all on the dash when I turn the car round just seems to be way too sensitive and I have to say it wasn't doing it initially but has started to do it the last two weeks.

My previous car was also a Skoda Octavia Estate. If anything the ride is much softer in the Karoq.

Is your Driving mode selected to "Normal" if Sport is selected it tends to tighten things up a bit.

@Rockinghorse

Not heard about any starter motor issues being common with these,

plenty about battery issues though, but then yours sounds fine, stop start is working.

The system being sensitive is no surprise, VW Group needed to do something to get WLTP Approval and RDE figures.

PS

There are members here that have found out many months after having had a car that Transit Blocks where still in place.

Your cars PDI sounds a bit sus. Have them look, or you look, obviously they need looking for or people would see them easily,

Technicians / fitters would at a PDI done properly if they did it with eyes open and brain not with Stop / Start enabled.

No, I haven't even tried sport mode yet I tend to drive on Eco most of the time . I try to get the most out of every gallon now I'm retired.

Perhaps it will loosen up after a few more miles. So far I am ever so slightly underwhelmed with the Karoq. Kinda wish I had gone for another Octavia or a Superb.

@Rockinghorse

How many miles have you done?

Maybe best get it out of ECO mode and get better fuel economy driving the car economically as it can be in normal mode.

That's a good point. I know it makes sense on a long journey as I get approx 8 more miles per gallon but I'm not sure it makes much difference on short journeys.

I've done 2230 miles now.

Bridgestone Turanza tyre are harsh and noisy. I can’t wait for them to wear out so I can replace them with something else.

Thanks for the tip. I must admit I have never used them before, I usually go for Continentals or Goodyears. As I only do about 8k a year now I hope they will last a while yet.
