1.2 TSI timing chain noise when engine is warm

Featured Replies

Hello!

I bought a 2010 Octavia last summer and the dealer replaced the whole timing chain set including chain, tensioner, gears etc. since it made rattling during test drive. It had 144000km then. At 149000km I heard some rattling during cold starts and dealer checked that chain and chain gears were like new and tensioner worked fine. They also checked oil filter and oil pressure which were also normal and they didn't know what caused the rattling.

Rattling noise went away itself and now my Skoda has 166000km. It doesn't make any rattle during cold starts (coldest was -27°C) but now if engine is warm there is a little noise during startup. I don't know how to describe it in english but it isn't really rattling. It's frequency follows the engine RPM and it only lasts about 0.5 seconds.

So my theory is that when engine is cold I have to crank it longer and oil pressure reaches tensioner before the engine starts. However when engine is warm it starts almost immediatilly and oil doesn't reach tensioner fast enough and there is some noise. I'm I correct and should I be worried? I've always changed oil and filter after 10000km.

Sorry for my bad english.
