Car play

Featured Replies

Hi

1st post for a very long time & im sure this has been asked many many times but.....

i have a 2015 Octavia Skout & don’t seem to be able to put the sat nav on my phone onto the cars screen as the dealer told me I would

any help will be greatly appreciated

thanks

Your car could be of the age when it needed to be a activated by a dealer - at a cost to you.

No doubt someone more in the know will be able to confirm that though.

Typo

With a cat that age it'll probably be one of 2 things.

1) You have MIB1 hardware which is not compatible with carplay/android auto.

2) You have the later MIB2 hardware and Smartlink (to get carplay/android auto to work) needs activating

Do you know which system you have?  If not then a brief description of what specs (cd drive? screen size? number of sd slots?) it has should be able to identify it.

Thanks John/Marky

ill check it later but it hasn’t got a CD player but an upgraded sound system beginning with a C

sorry to be vague but I haven’t had it long

That'll be canton.  CD slot would be in the glovebox unit.  If no CD slot it sounds like either MIB2 bolero or Amundsen so probably just requires a visit to the dealer for smartlink to be unlocked.  Most dealers charge £130-160.  Not sure what the charge would be in euros.

Thanks Mark

is there definitive way to find out which unit it is?

The dealership have been shocking so not sure how I will get on with them😩

Post a picture of the information screen showing the unit part number?

Or if you can’t find that, a pic of the screen will do, I can tell you from that. 2015 is a dodgy year, it might have SmartLink but it might not. If there is no CD drive in the glovebox, just SD slots then you should be able to have it activated. Another way to sell is to look through the menu, if SmartLink is there then it can be activated. If it’s not, it can’t be.

Not much help, but my early 2016 Scout (UK sourced), had the SmartLink option as illustrated above, but required activation, at an extra cost, by the dealer.

Is this what I was looking for?

If that is your car then you have the required hardware. Have you tried plugging your phone in to the car. Both carplay and android auto require a cable plugged into the socket under the air controls.

If using android you need to have the Android auto app installed. Carplay is built in.

If this then pops up with a message saying visit your dealer then follow the instructions.

Thank you everyone

Can't help thinking it's a bit off that you have to pay to get this activated.

I know people with Seats, VWs, even Kias such all come with this unlocked from the factory.

Why on earth did skoda put it in and then not allow you to use it?

I know Skoda is the cheaper end of the spectrum and they try and keep prices now, gain it in extras etc but it looks pretty bad when a even a Kia doesnt charge extra for this.

I'd quite like this, however paying £130 fit it seems a rip off, esp considering its to upgrade what is sound wise, not a great stereo.

Totally agree alex

im just trying to negotiate having it done for free after going through the worst experience ever buying the car!

what do they actually do surely there’s a cheaper way?

Unfortunately it’s activated using a SWaP code, which is loaded into the car by your the dealers computer.

The annoying thing I bet it's not easy to swap out the while unit for aftermarket ones these days either, not like the old days, now it's linked to all the car info and options etc.

I think I'll just get a phone holder and use Google maps and Alexa on the phone instead, just like I do in my other cars...  It's £10 for a phone holder and £120 in my pocket then.

I know it's like closing the door after the horse has bolted, but if someone wanted Smartlink in their car, shouldn't they have checked this BEFORE they bought it?

Can't see how you can blame Skoda, they've done nothing wrong. If you'd bought a car from most other manufacturers there wouldn't even have been an option to upgrade. Smartlink would have been on the options list just like any other option. If you buy an older car then don't expect later technology. Was Google Car play and Andriod Auto std on KIA's the same age as your Skoda?  I don't have the information to hand, but from memory I thought VAG introduced this BEFORE any of the Korean brands. Both Korean and Japanese were late to the table making Auto and Play available. Some manufacturers like BMW were dead set against it - they certainly were in 2017 when I bought my car, the may have reluctantly changed since.

Not easy to swap out?  Sasha's defo the expert on information and prices - if you're lucky it might be easier than you think.

Only post FL cars come with SmartLink as standard, the older cars including others in the VAG group have it as an option. It’s the cost of the licenses from Apple and Google which VAG swallow into the cost of the newer cars. It can be done outside of the dealer network but the cost of the activation is pretty much the same as getting it done at the dealer. I love the full integration in the radio, it’s well worth paying for IMO.

A quick Google says they introduced it all inclusive in 2016 and had all existing units that were compatible, back to 2014 given an upgrade for free.

He did check first first and the dealer said “yes”.

I bought a 2016 Rapid Spaceback in 2017 and the dealership claimed this wasn’t the case. Offered to do it at full cost - I declined!
