Shuddering from my VRS

Featured Replies

Evening,

Wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of what this problem may be.

I have noticed recently that my VRS is shuddering at high speed, so anything over 60MPH and on certain roads you can feel the shuddering through the seat. I've have some passengers notice it also when on the motorway etc.

I had a full hunter alignment check done and all is ok. I've had all 4 of my Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres (AS3's) balanced also, all within the last week and the issue is still present.

The suspension and shocks are all ok. I don't notice the shuddering through the steering wheel that much. I've also rotated the wheels and its the same.

Can anyone else think what it could be? I recently got 2 tyres replaced, and its possible its just coincidence but I feel it started since then. Is it possible the tyres could be the problem even though they match the other two? They have been fitted correctly I'm sure and the outside of the tyre is facing me so I assume all is ok.

Anything else I'm missing?

Cheers

If its started since then I would go and get the wheels rebalance as a weight could have fallen off or hes put it in the wrong place.

I’ve had them balanced by two difference places and it’s still the same. I’m thinking surly 2 people can’t get it that wrong?

Could it it be a bad batch of tyres from Goodyear?

Is there anyone locally that can balance them on the car?

Didn’t know this was a thing I’ll need to have a look.

Could be an out of round tyre.

Have you checked the wheel bolts are tight?

Yeah wheel bolts are torqued correctly.

Im just wondering if it could be anything more serious like a gearbox issue or engine?

My car is great everywhere else just apart from above 60.

Whilst it' shuddering at speed, dip the clutch. If the shuddering is still there it's not your engine or gearbox.

DSG so cant do that unfortunately.

Bugger.

switching the car to ECO mode will disengage the DSG clutch if you lift off and cruise, say build up to that speed on the motorway and lift off the gas.

Off topic, but doesn't coasting in neutral use more fuel than coasting in gear?

No

Eco mode coasting works from just over 80mph

Surely the answer isn’t a simple “no” but is entirely situation dependant.

It's my understanding that in all injection engines use zero or very little fuel when off throttle (situation dependant).  If you are disengaging the clutch then you need to provide enough fuel to turn the engine over on what is effectively tickover which will probably use more fuel than off throttle.

Anyway back on thread - in ECO mode the DSG gearbox with coast and so the engine and DMF will be disconnected from the rest of the gearbox and drive-chain for ruling out

interested in what you find in ECO or pushing the DSG stick into N at the speed you are having shuddering.

from my paranoid DSG gearbox self

You sure about that ?

Tried this today as I thought about it whilst driving. Shuddering was still there. I mean it’s very minimal but still present. Must be the balance of the wheels I presume.

Wheels, tyres, brake disks, drive shaft, wheel bearing.

Start with the simple things first the wheel balance - you could try swapping front to rear and see if anything changes.

mine does this now you've mentioned it. ugh. I want to get all 4 wheels balanced but i would like them 'super balanced' perfect.

best places?

You sure about that ?

Disconnected running gear means no engine or drivetrain drag hence, the minimal amount of fuel being used at tick over is far less than no fuel usage with drivetrain/engine drag.

Do you really think VAG would introduce such a thing if it used more fuel ? FFS they've been caught out previously, do you really think they'd risk it again.

Far more intelligent/trained automotive engineers than us have worked on this stuff.

I guess that makes sense, or does it?

No really it does ...
