Front end vibration

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 1U?.Estate

Was a taxi before,I have front end vibration.Started when braking from 130kmh on a motorway.Thought it was the winter tires i had borrowed for a job interview in Austria.I live in Hungary BTW.

Now it has got worse,i can feel it when driving, ever so slightly, mostly when i brake feel it good.

Went to an MOT establishment, they checked it out and said, nothing was going to fall off! They also said,it was in the brakes and they needed freeing up,my colour wasnt good etc(brake disc colour!) But vibrations are still there,I feel it through the steering ,than the brake pedal, this is only very slightly sometimes when the wobble is agressive.Could it be steering rack??? this is my only other option,or not???

Looses flywheel was also brought forward by garage.?

Are those tyres you borrowed balanced properly? Does it hapen on all speeds or just at some speeds?

My money is on the brake discs needing replacing.

If yours are a little old, put new pads in and definitely rebuild the calipers just to be certain, but I reckon your discs are wearing...

Put summer tires on and it came back, was hoping it was a balance weight that had fallen off on winter tires.

Not Brake discs,i replaced all when i bought the car 2 years ago, they still look fine.

Dont feel the wobble/vibration through the brake pedal but through the steering.

It has a very faint wobble/vibration when driving normal now,i can feel it but if you drove the car you may not notice it.It is also intermittent.

check your cv-joints

Yep, mine was through the steering as well, and again most apparent when under braking from 60mph+.

Might be worth checking the sockets on your hub, especially where the tracking arm locates. I've known more than one wear heavily enough to cause problems.

Had car looked at by mot garage, all they said is what i first posted.Nothing going to fall off!

If its not raining tomorrow, going to jack it up and wheels off and have another good pry bar around all the joints etc.

What did you mean by sockets?

Warped discs or cv's as above

Worn wishbone bushes?

Disc(s) not seated flat on the hub?

On the wheel hub, the little hole that the tracking arm goes into.

These holes are tapered and can wear out enough to result in movement.

For that hole to wear surely the nut holding the TRE to the hub would have to be loose, allowing movement where there shouldn't be. Hopefully that's unlikely!

@Crashcage worth jacking the car up and checking for play in the steering/suspension, but if you've taken it to a garage they should've already checked this. It will be easier to check for play with the wheels still on.

Nope. It just needs either one hefty side impact, or a series of smaller impacts that widen the hole and allow enough movement to worsen it.

I went through two other hubs (mainly because the sellers described them incorrectly) that all had the same issue. It's barely perceptible during a physical inspection, but can manifest quite clearly at speed.

In fact, overtightening the bolt could potentially cause the socket to widen, too...

Well,you were right!!!

I had hoped it wasnt possible, but its the tapered hole where the track rod end fits.

Reason for it,I think pattern parts that are not such a good copy!

I replaced the N/side front wheel bearing, and while there found play in main ball joint as well,so i did all, rubber bushes,TR  end etc

And i can remember when tightening the TR end,it tightened up solid so i took the nut off and put a washer under.Obviously this still didnt tighten it up enough hence the play.

Pattern parts??? Sometimes it may pay to put original parts on in important places.

I think the taper is too long and maybe the angle is off as well.

Again my apologies Tjaskmaster
