Identifying a VRS245

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I am looking to get a Mk3 VRS estate.  I have established that for me a VAQ diff is important.  I can now, thanks to this forum, identify a pre-facelift VRS230, which I know again thanks to this forum, has the VAQ diff.

BUT, post facelift, how can I tell if a car is a FL VRS230, with no diff, a VRS245 special edition or a VRS245.  All the options, and bolt on black packs and optional wheels leave me unable to tell if an advert is correct or not?  and I don't want to buy a car only to find its not what I thought it was.

Also, as a fail safe, once I am viewing a car, with the bonnet up, how easy is it to tell if the VAQ differential is fitted?  Any photos would be much appreciated to help me on my way.

Thanks all in advance.  I have tried and failed to find this information on the forum, or anywhere on google.

Graeme.

The problem is 90% of dealers can't tell the difference between a 1.6 Tdi and a 245 petrol.  They just don't do there homework   all they see is  £££££££££ signs

  • Funnily enough, mine went onto a white diesel estate too. Although, tbh, I think they look better on the estates.

I'm not sure if this answers your question for visual identification but you could always run the plate on a reg check app or  online and it should tell you the model and BHP? They're free just to find out basic details like that.

The Pre FL 230 with the VAQ had black exhaust tips  Full leather seats and electric front seats.  The  coloured letters  " VRS "   were stitched into the leather and not just stamped onto the leather 19" black Extreams and eletric folding mirrors with boarding spots..  The door trim and around the gear leaver was gloss black, not carbon affect

The Challenge edition FL 245 spec over the ordinary 245 is below

WHEELS

19" Xtreme black alloy wheels

EXTERIOR

Black vRS badging front & rear
Black exhaust tailpipes with sports sound

INTERIOR

vRS sport seats in Alcantara
Heated front seats
Electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory function and lumbar support Electrically adjustable front passenger's seat and lumbar support

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Front and rear parking sensors
Front assist
Colour multifunction trip computer including lap timer Keyless entry and start/stop

COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

Auto-dimming, electrically adjustable, heated & foldable door mirrors with boarding spots and memory function

Dynamic chassis control (DCC)

The 2017 Limited Edition 245 has front/rear parking sensors, 19" Black Extremes, Black exhaust tips, electric/heated front seats, Alcantara/leather seats with stitched coloured Vrs logo's on all seats, folding mirrors with boarding spots, 340mm vented front discs and importantly 310mm vented rear discs. Also tiny plastic rear bumper extensions due to the wider rear track, lap timer. Quicker steering just 2.1 turns lock to lock.

Also  RS245 FL will have a gloss black front grill and black exhaust tips where the RS 180/245hp will have a matte black finish and chrome exhaust tips.... it gets confusing because FL owners call their cars RS245's. In Australia with the FL you either have an RS with 230 or 245hp or have the RS245

I though the 'v' on the badge was exclusively coloured black on the 245?  Or is it that across the whole vRS range from a certain point?

The " V " is only black on the  Pre FL 230 special edition and the 245 challenge edition

Trawling through Autorader ALL facelift cars seem to have a black V.  It seems this can only be used to differentiate between the 220 and the pre-FL 230.

And the 'Launch Edition' 245, which was the same as the Challenge but without DCC

They shouldn't be.

A FL 230 and a FL non special edition 245 will be grey.

In terms of time line, this might help you a bit...

Prefacelift 220bhp

Prefacelift '230' 230bhp (effectively a special edition with extras)

Facelift 230bhp

Facelift '245', 245bhp (effectively a special edition with extras)

Facelift 245bhp

Facelift '245 Challenge', 245bhp (a special edition with extras)

All the cars in bold will have the extras described by others above such as the black V, 19 inch wheels etc.

I had a similar challenge when I was considering a Mk3 vRS petrol wagon to replace the Yeti. It does get confusing, and of course you can't rely on even the Skoda dealers to describe the car properly!

One of the things I used to cross-check was Co2 emissions as these do seem to differ. If it helps this is what I found;

220 DSG 147g
220 man 143g
230 man 143g

230FL Man 149g
230FL DSG 149g

245 man 156g
245 DSG 144g

So if you are trying to differentiate FL cars, it does appear that you can use Co2 to do this. And this *should* be accurate if using AutoTrader to trawl for cars, as this info is auto-entered when they list the car. Based on the registration number.

Good luck!

If it’s a 245 and it doesn’t have the VIEW button on the steering wheel it has the VAQ diff :)

That explains why I don't know what a view button looks like.:blush

What's your budget?  There's a 230 for sale in Aldershot from the same place I got my 230 for a bargain price now.

I viewed it at the same time as mine but chose grey over black.

could be, I also have a Speed limiter. Works by using the CC  buttons on the stalk but if I select the limiter, drive to the desired speed and turn on using the rocker button on the stalk, just drive normally and the car wont go any faster than the set speed unless you plant your right foot in emergency's.

Using the top button brings up Driver Aids, Lane assist, Cruise and limiter selected by the thumb wheel

Thought that by pressing your special view button it may give you different options on the digital screen format, map, no map, speedo, rev counter.

More differences then. That figure listed was based on a March 19 car.

Don't forget the 245 comes in GPF and non GPF versions depending how early it is
