Car diagnostics

Featured Replies

Hello,

still having problems with power steering although new pump fitted a while ago.

i am looking for mobile diagnostics testing in Canterbury, don’t really want to drive vehicle while it is like this

can anyone recommend anyone please ?

thanks in advance

What sort of problems are you having? A lack of assistance means more work, but the car will still steer the same.

Hello Ken,

i hardly use the car, light sometimes comes up on dashboard, power steering nice and light not affected at all.

i have a brand new battery, fully charged, switch ignition on,, light goes out, start engine, all ok, then gurgling swishing sound from near side front wheel arch.

have removed battery, checked fluid level, all ok, just put a tiny drop in while I had access

i am puzzled by all this

Should have added, if light does come up on dash, I switch off then back on and it goes out

i did get local garage to check, not Skoda , said they couldn’t find anything wrong

its a definite gurgling noise at front end by pump

Only two things can cause the PAS light on the dash to illuminate, a faulty pump or a faulty sensor. Since you've replaced the pump already it must be the sensor.

Ignore the gurgling, it means the pump is running when it shouldn't be which confirms the sensor diagnosis.

Many thanks

much appreciated

Low fluid level

Blown fuse

Wiring issue

Three things off the top of my head that have caused a PAS light to come up.

Hello,

many thanks

went out to car, turned ignition on, steering light went out

started engine, never touched steering at all, after a little while gurgling noise started.

Failing alt regulator (low voltage) triggered the PAS light on mine and cut all assistance.

There's no level sensor, hence the dipstick.

The pump is running all the time even with no steering input, it has to be the angle sensor or wiring to it.

No level sensor this is true. But there is a temperature sensor. If the pump gets too hot, which it does when the fluid is low then it cuts out.

Sure, but none of these things would cause the specific problem the OP has.

Only a faulty pump unit, faulty angle sensor or faulty wiring between the two will give this exact issue.

Hello,

thanks for all your help

i must add, since I had new pump fitted, I have never lost steering assistance

i did check fluid level, it was just off the ball on the dipstick

the problem is sometimes the light will come up, I never lose assistance, if I switch off and restart the light has gone, does not happen that often, but nevertheless it does

as I said before I started car yesterday, did not touch steering at all, after a very short time I could hear pump noise rising and falling as though it was trying to do something

did contact local Skoda dealer, who I had problems with some years ago, that’s another story, overcharged air conditioning and blew seals

i am now wondering about calling mobile guy who has proper fault code reading equipment

i ask, will he be able to pinpoint problem

thanks again

The fault code would be really useful and save all the assumption and guesswork. Also can check the turn sensor in live data.

Thanks Ross,

you helped me many moons ago

trouble here is the garage I bought Skoda from, they were so helpful, became friends, they lost the franchise, Skoda thought they weren’t “posh” enough, yet they were Skoda dealers from the days of the Estelle when people used to make jokes

will look into contacting someone on monday

thanks again

Try filling the reservoir to 1/4" below the neck. Why have it only just over the minimum?

Well, the "gurgling noise" makes me think that the fluid level is low in effect.

So I'd try doing a PAS bleed (jack up front end and swing steering lock to lock about 10 times each way), then put the car back on the wheels and add some PAS fluid.

Hello,

did remove battery and check level, was just off dipstick so topped up

did not jack up front of car to bleed, just turned steering wheel from lock to lock ?

Ok, the jack up is more best practice to relieve strain on the tyres and steering whilst swinging than anything else. Now, did you check the fluid level after bleeding? This matters because a successful bleed will reduce the fluid volume in the hydraulic system.

The gurgling is fluid being pumped through the rack even though the steering isn't being used, it shouldn't be doing it and it's probably why the pump had to be replaced.

Hello all,

took to the garage yesterday they hooked it up to diagnostics

found the angle steering speed sensor was faulty

they removed, terminals were white and corroded, how I do not know

have fitted a new pump and all is well
