So....just bought a new (‘05) octavia estate 4x4 to replace the one I just retired at 248,000m -and ....main beam comes on -then goes off after 5 seconds-I got it hooked up to a diagnostic and got the codes in the pic I’ve posted -anybody got any idea where to find the relay (?) I need to replace.....?!!?

(Thankin y’all in advance....)

I know it's an obvious thought, but with three components failing test so close together have you checked the earth circuit?

Thanks Mickey -bad earth’s sure can cause all kinds of weird and wonderful ‘effects’ -so ‘tis a thought -however scouring the forum leads me to believe it’s a control column switch fault -seems to be a bit of a thing ...?

Cheers

The fuse for headlight cleaning system will probably be have blown or been removed. The latter is common as a method to disable the headlight washer jets.

As for the other two, that does feel like a wiring issue. Check both bulbs are the correct type and properly fitted, might even be worth a new pair. Also check the headlight connectors for any corrosion and any obvious ground points for the headlights :)

I’ve found a couple of similar faults described -particularly the 5 sec delay -seems pretty clear it’s the switch( -all the housings connections etc on the lamps are dead clean and good ). But thank you for your thoughts.

Look up a thread including posts from @J.R. about problems with column switches.  Sometime in the last couple of months.

Sorry I can't chase it up right now; on a deadline!

I'd expect a switch failure would result in a different fault code and probably be stored under address 16-Steering wheel.

The pre-FL MK2 Octavia is very similar electrically to a MK5 Golf which means there is no relay for the high/main beams. Instead, both the headlights and headlight switch connect directly to the CECM and it uses solid state electronics to monitor/power the bulbs.
