Current driving test - whats involved?

Featured Replies

A girl at work is learnign to drive and has been told she has to do a Theory Test, Hazzard Awareness Test and something else that she cant remember

We're sure the missing part i s the traditional driving bit - but are we wrong ? Have they added another non-driving part to getting your licence these days?

Well Bike wise theory and hazzard perception - even though I passed my car driving test 20 Years ago.

Then CBT and main test.

think the other is the main driving test

AFAIK, it's split in two...Theory (which is the old theory test and now hazard perception) and Practical (which is the old driving test and now also the vehicle safety check questions).

Vehicle safety check questions?

Theres the "show me, Tell me" section of the test,

open the bonnet and ask questions like, Where would i check the oil, where does the brake fluid go, how would you top up the water etc

And is it turning out better drivers?

 surely they dont expect 18yr old girls to know that ?!

 :P

Vehicle Safety Check questions are the "show me, tell me" questions...so being able to figure out how to open the bonnet/look at onboard diagnostics is a Good Thing... :D

She's really worried now, someone had told her she has to know how to change a wheel and we'd said "no dont be silly"....... now she thinks she's going to fail.

 surely they dont expect 18yr old girls to know that ?!

'course they do...just as they expect them to be able to do an emergency stop, control the clutch and reverse around a corner.

Not like they're going to get them to strip down the engine or anything, it's just "show me where you'd check your oil" and that...it's really simple stuff that anyone who owns a car should know!

I don't think wheel changing is included - checking tyre pressures might be though...

What 18 year old girl would look at her oil pressure gauge on the way to work and think hmmm 50psi - it was 60 yesterday, and work out that if you thump the gauge it goes back to 60 ? :D

They do ask 18yo girls. They also ask 25 year old guys with mechanical engineering degrees! Although to be fair, the examiner wouldn't have known that when I passed my test.

It also covers how would you know the PAS was working, brakes, lights, check tyre pressures etc. All those basic safety checks you should do befroe every journey and definitely before you go razzing round cumbria in a hire car :)

naff really but it must have been someones stupid idea to charge us more for driving tests.

Could be funny to take a test in a Prius though - "so Mr Examiner, whats this under the bonnet? and whats that fancy power delivery diagram chart thing?"

One who'd be about 68 years old now?

SWMBO passed her test recently In a ford focus, My technique to help her was take a picture of the engine bay and label the parts like the dipstick, washer bottle, coolant bottle, Oil filler cap, brake Fluid, she seemed to pass it no problems.

Like some have said its only the very basics they dont expect a cylinder head gasket change so she should be fine

We've told her they take the wheel off the car before the test so you have to replace it before you can go out and drive  Also suggested that occasionally they disconnect the battery/or plug leads.

I did that for my misses xx years ago and got thumped for my troubles!!

tell her to look on the AA driving test web site - not the drinking one!!

tell her not to worry too much about the "show me tell me" as the maximum mark you can get for getting it wrong, is just a minor fault, another fourteen to go before she fails ! ;)

Every woman should know were to put the oil..

In the chip pan :sofahide:

Hi

The safety questions are a doddle. She will need to know a few basics like how to check oil, coolant, brake fluid and screenwash. Underbonnet, just has to point to relevant bottle / dipstick and advise cheking between min / max level or screenwash present.

Bulb checks, tyre condition and pressure checks, brake test, PAS test, handbrake test, horn test. She will be asked two questions from 13. I have heard a guy on test (not one of mine) answer F**ked if I know to one of these questions and he still passed.

I reckon it is a good idea myself.
