Blow from dipstick pipe while idling

Featured Replies

Hi,

I test drove a 64 plate diesel Octavia VRS yesterday and while the engine was idling (after driving for approx. 15 mins) I pulled the dipstick. I noticed some white smoke coming from the dipstick pipe.

Is this normal enough or cause for concern? Car drives perfectly.

Car has 47k miles done and water pump and timing belt have been just done.

Thanks in advance!!!

perfectly normal oil vapour from a warm car unless its excessive then it could likely be worn piston rings which is unlikely for a car that age. is there white smoke from the exhaust?  how much oil is it using?

Hi @JohnnyType2,

Didn't notice white smoke from the exhaust. I don't know in relation to oil usage as the car is for sale at a VW dealership, I am looking at possibly buying it.

Blow by gas, it's normal as long as it's not excessive. The dipstick has an o-ring seal at the top. The vehicle uses positive crankcase ventilation (PCV)

Those gases go through an oil separator and back into the engine to be burnt.

Quick and easy check for excessive blow by, slacken the oil filler cap and lift it slightly by hand, you should feel a slight vacuum trying to pull the cap back down.

If the cap gets blown upwards the engine is goosed, or the PCV is blocked.
