Right oil choice for topup

Featured Replies

Hi,

Spent a few hours reading up to try to figure out the right oil top up my Skoda. It's a 1.5 petrol, just over a year old. Approaching 5k miles and been keeping an eye on the dipstick which is getting towards the min level.

Thought it would be a straightforward choice, but the manual doesn't seem to specify a viscosity, and even th VW 508 Vs 504 isn't clear.. seems to suggest 508 but that looks to be just done in 0w20 which seems a bit unusual to me (though I'm used to older engines I guess).

Popped into local Skoda and they've given me a 5w40 castrol magnatec which is VW 502/505 so now I'm even more confused! That's from the chassis number, they said there's some conflicting info as well. But I'm guessing if/when I take it for a service that's what they're going to fill it with, tho I've got no idea what's in it at the moment.

Still waiting for the car to flag it needs first service too.

If your car is on variable servicing as it left the factory it will flag for 24 months, 18,000-20,000 miles.

Except you have now bought oil that is for fixed servicing.....

'THEY GAVE YOU THE WRONG OIL. TELL THEM, & TELL THE DEALER PRINCIPAL.'

?

Where was this?

You can tell them to do a free oil and filter change if you have added much.

They need to get whoever sold you that trained.

It was VW504/507 that was recommended for TSI's for Variable / Flexible servicing. (& dealers use that for fixed as well.) so 5w 30 FS III

But then the WLTP came about and the factory fill is VW508 /509 so 0w 20 FS IV.    Can be costly.

You can use VW504/507  (you can even do fixed servicing and use VW502 5w 40 FS)

But top up now with VW 508 /509 if it left the factory with that.  Change at the service if you want to VW504 /507

See the little message at the bottom.  'A'

That was them going 0w 20 FS IV so that they got the WLTP & RDE they were after, and then the same if cars were tested as they were imported.

They could not care less after the car is in the new owners hands.

Thanks for the speedy reply! Production date is showing as Apr 2018 in the app if helps, looks like the 508 is the way to go then. Cheers!

Not only the way to go, the way you must go if the car is not getting serviced / oil change for another year.  VW504/507 would have been OK really.

Who dealt with you in the dealers is dangerous to Skoda drivers.    Best get a refund, and if you have used that oil have them do a free oil and filter change.

It's all confusing so expect a difference of opinion from everyone - including VAG.

But have to agree with Root,  VW505 defo not what I'd have used in a 1.5tsi - I was under the impression it was for the older turbo diesels

I'm on longlife service intervals with both my 1.4tsi and they use VW507.

Ah sorry just saw your longer reply too - hadn't put the oil in the car, so far spent most of the morning reading up and it didn't really align with anything I'd seen. Actually quite interesting where all the changes have come from.. alot has changed from what I used to know!

Simply the 1.4 TSI that @Scot5 talks about never got WLTP Tested and they just got what had been used and still is in the way of oil.

5w 30 FS III (long Life.)

1.4TSI's being used in the Hybrids will have VW508/509 in now.

1.5 TSI with GPF can use VW 504/507 or the VW508 /509.

(they can even go on fixed servicing and use VW502 so 5w 40 FS, but dealerships are not going to be doing that.)
