How to wire in a dash cam

Featured Replies

I want to wire in a dash cam that was given to me (and not use the cigarette lighter socket of course).

Halfords and others supply a kit. Hoe & where do I connect such?

Although I dont have a Roomster, in my Octavia and Fabia, I tapped into the rear wiper feed from the fuse box as this is only live when ignition is on. the dash cam kits let you hijack a fuse inside the fusebox so fitment is really easy. you just hide the wire behind the pillar as the trim is removable, down into the fusebox.

Many thanks sakta. That's very helpful.

You need an "Add-A-Circuit" - it's basically a dummy fuse with two fuse sockets on it's top, and a red cable coming out of it.  Find a fuse in the fusebox that's only live when iginition (or accessory depending on your preference) is on, or if you have a multimeter you can sometimes find an empty fuse slot that has one set of contacts which become live.  Take out your chosen fuse and plug it in to the Add-a-Circuit, then another fuse for the dashcam feed (a 1A fuse is good enough for that).  Then all you need to do is plug the Add-a-circuit in to where you took the original fuse out of.  It's tricky if you're not familiar with wiring stuff up.

Personally, I use a blank fuse slot, and an Add-a-circuit, which I've permenantly attached a small ciggy lighter phone charger to, which gives me two USB ports with 2A on each port.  One powers my dashcam (StreetGuardian 2-camera), the other powers my Garmin satnav on the rare occasion I use it instead of the car's built-in satnav.  That means I can just use a long USB cable to power the dashcam or whatever.

Just remember not to wire the dash cam directly to the fused supply. Seen many people cut the plug off a 12v accessory socket and wire it directly in and wonder why their dashcam packs up after a short while. Quite often the camera has an input voltage of say 5v and the plug drops the vehicle 12v to a suitable level, best get a fitting kit that includes voltage regulation.
