Rattles

Featured Replies

Getting a bit frustrated with the small rattles my car suffers from, most annoying being one from what sounds like the passenger B pillar.  Yesterday I set about investigating and was quite surprised by the lack of quality; the b pillar doesn't appear to have any clips on one side:

The opposite side to the photo above is more solid but the side above just popped out with ease.  I can't see anything broken or missing.  With the pillar off the only noise I could locate was the seat belt height adjuster, so I attended to that and reassembled everything as well as I could.  Rattle is better but not gone which would suggest I have more than one source.

I'm thinking it might be the rear passenger door or lower down the panel?

I've had years of Honda Accord's that had fantastic interior quality and removing panels was a real PITA and would usually result in new clips being needed.  I shouldn't really be surprised, our new A3 had rattles from the day we got it with 5 miles on the clock.

I had a rattle from the same area, was very strange.  I eventually tracked it down to a plastic moulding around the bottom of the seat belt which was rattling off the plastic seat base.  I wrapped the moulding with wiring loom tape and the rattle was gone...!

I'm going to have a look at that tomorrow - weather permitting.

Found quite a lot of the noise has been coming from the boot door lock, or more specifically the catch.  It's nor quite been pulling the door in when locking.  A liberal spray of lithium grease seems to have helped.

Proper doin' my head now! Had the car in for its MOT (passed without and advisories) and asked them to have a good poke about underneath.  One of the exhaust heat shields was loose but sorting that hasn't done much.  I've had the panels off the boot lid, the trim around the boot lock on the car, clips replaced, locks lubed, still no joy.

FOUND IT!!!! it's the panoramic roof.  Open it, even just the tilt and it goes.  Now to fix...as even on tilt the rattle goes I'm guessing it's the join between the two glass screens.  I see it's a major problem with Audi's so currently perusing Audi forums.

take a look:

I have read that before but hadn't really paid much attention.  Had another look and used the attachment info.  Had to use my own grease on the mechanicals and Honda's excellent shin-etsu on the runner.

It has gone but I'm not calling it solved as many audi owners report it coming back.

so for you it is gone by greasing the PD, which is described in the attachment, but it was not the windshield?

If so, what greases did you use?

Could you post links?

My noise was coming from more the rear and went when the sunroof was tilted so I figured it's something to do with the meeting of the two glass panels.  I cleaned everything and used a normal lithium based grease for the channels and mechanisms.  Shin-Etsu is an expensive silicone grease from Honda and is used for seals.  I've had Honda for years and had this stuff left over so thought I'd use it.

Mine had a slight rattle that seemed to come from near the bottom of the windscreen/dash - cured when I fitted a dash cam tucking the cable into the TOP of the windscreen&headlining! I have also have had the rattle mentioned further up the thread where the small bit of hard plastic at the lower attachment of the seat belt contacts the plastic trim on the outside of the seat base - one wrap of black insulation tape solved this. Other than this mine has been more or less rattle free.

However poverty spec so no sunroof.

You're not missing out! They don't seem to be the best design.

So far, I have an almost silent roof, very slight occasional creak.  Couple of little rattles to tackle but they seem easy enough.

Mine does rattle sometimes but I have found simply opening and closing it stops the noises for many weeks.
