DSG TCU Remaps/Boxes.. looking for feedback please

Featured Replies

Ok have driven about 3k miles in my vRS 245 DSG, my first ever 'auto' there are definitely some annoyances with its default behaviour/programming.

I know a certain vocal person will harp on about manual boxes etc.. stop before you even start it, for some of the time day to day it would fix the problem we agree!

Also another DSG owner will then say it works best if your drive it like you stole it.. got that one check.. 99% of the time I can't do that. Family and license reasons.

Fixes/improvements for normal real world day to day driving with a bit of acceleration on the slip road or an odd A road overtake.

Can anyone with a TCU remap/box comment on how its behaviour is altered/improved please?

The kickdown is super irritating for one when its a turbo charged car delivering max torque at low revs, I know in a manual it would just do as instructed.. as long as the engine is around min rev delivering boost its just gonna go when you press the loud pedal.. this doesn't always seem to be the case with DSG. Even in sport mode.. I press the pedal delay pause delay.. crap he's stirred the porridge kick down revs go sky high jolt.. lol

Can you within reason program manual DSG mode with a TCU remap to just do what its told?

Any other benefits when running in D or S auto mode to call out?

Edit: Also as another thought, do pedal boxes also help to sort any of these DSG annoyances out? The car def drives better at slow round town speed in Sport mode, wondering if this is more to do with throttle mapping?

Thanks!

There is a VCDS setting for the ‘Audi’ throttle response which may help? I will try this at the weekend but it interfered with the cruise control in my last car so wasn’t used.

I’ve also noticed the ‘reluctance’ in my present car which didn’t show in the previous one.

People do recommend pedal boxes so check that out.

I end up moving the DSG gear shifter to the left into 'manual' mode to shift up and down when i need to know exactly how the car will perform.

It's quite fun accelerating through the gears by pushing the shifter up with the accelerator pedal hard to the floor, almost like an arcade racing simulator.

the only down side is a jerky car when slowing and shifting down the gears.

I'd love a remap but i don't have the funds or the guts to have it done (with my luck the 1 in a million chance of it blowing up would happen to me)

Well I do use manual mode and the flappy paddles to give me a bit more say in the matter.. generally for me its using the manual overide shifting down gears to keep revs up and shifting up gears to keep revs down as needed as I run it in sport auto most of the time.

Compromise :)

Full manual mode is a bit better but not exactly instant changes up unless pressing on. lol

Surely 245ps minimum can keep up with UK traffic where there will be those getting where they want to be with 75ps.

Huh? Did you misread.. I don't need more power just a more consistent way of getting the car to deliver it. LOL

You will get used to it and the available power there is, it is more than the suspension can handle well.  Automated manual, just 'D', 'S' or use the gear stick / paddles for driver involvement.

Switch off everything you can that VW / Skoda fitted to keep you safe. ASR / TC. Fit decent tyres.

ok.. thanks not sure what you are adding to my original request for input about DSG gearbox remapping, if anything its even more confusing. 🤔

You haven't told me anything I don't know already. I already fully know the car and where its limitations are and what needs to be disabled/changed to get the best from the car.. this must be the case given my request to attempt to address the default DSG behaviour.

Thanks, I think the Audi mod causes issues for all the latest cars. I think a pedal box might be an option with mine being a PCH.

New car, warranty, up to you what you do but getting to know the car is sometimes a good move.

Really they are not that limited when you drive them as they can drive.

Personally,  I find the flappy paddle override very useful for slip roads etc. A couple of pulls on the left paddle drops the car into a better gear for getting up to speed and then reset back to auto with a short press of the right paddle. No need for kickdown.

I had mine remapped by a local tuning outfit and was a bit disappointed, it has very mildly improved it but it still labours a lot when you get on it in Drive and has those horrible slurring shifts in Drive and Sport (made much worse with a louder exhaust.) The big gap is still there if you floor it in Sport but it doesn't jolt any more. I'm not sure exactly what tuning program they use, but if I had deep pockets I'd be forking out for the TVS remap, by all accounts it is the only way to go but it's very expensive.

Oh by the way I tried the Audi throttle mod but it did all sorts of weird jerks and wouldnt blip the throttle on down shifts so it got turned off.

They use what they had available to to get the WLTP Approval / Certification and the 245 figure.  Crap Engine Management.

Do you prefer Japanese

@TDIum

Do you mean me?

I like an Indian, French, Italian not had Japanese food really.

As to cars i have had Japanese, German, Hungarian, Spanish, Czech, British, Swedish / Chinese, Italian, South Korean and maybe a few i forget,

as long as they work all is good.

Only you come here and repeatedly slag off Skodas, recent example: "Crap Engine Management." but according to your profile you drive a Mitsubishi and a Suzuki?

@TDIum

Plus a SEAT, a Skoda & a BMW.  Had a few Skoda.

Gosh it sounds like you're an expert.

An enthusiast i would say.

Tow barges dead handy for moving the cars that break down..

Thanks, another more sensible post.. this helps.

I found this on the TVS website http://www.tvsengineering.nl/nl/gearbox/dsg/dsg-dq380.html points to a stock engine DSG remap to improve drivability.

Looking at the PDF flyer sheet its listing all of my 'complaints' DQ380/DQ381 which is the 7 Speed my car has.. think its the 380 but could be wrong.

Strange that my 245 produced 248.6bhp with the standard ECU when it was certified for only 241.6bhp under NEDC. Skoda claimed combined 42.8mpg and my long term average is 40mpg so only about 6-7% out.;)

@shyVRS245

In what way strange as Maximum BHP & Nm Torque is actually minimum BHP / Torque as they have to produce at altitude and extreme weather and poorer fuel.

You are in the UK, not more than 3,000 ft above sea level, in temps not above 40*oC and running 95 ron minimum unleaded of good quality.

?

When was your car built, pre or post WLTP?

June 2017 pre WLTP no GPF fitted. Do you believe later cars have less power than earlier ones?

I strongly suspect that as they had to do across the models they had to get the test results on the Tests and sometimes this has affected how they drive on roads.

Which is the issue they have now with the RDE2 coming up and they need in the real world the scores on the doors and vehicles fit for purpose without odd driving characteristics.

Using VW508/509 helped them get figures required in tests.  That's done now, so what is the next cunning stunt.

265 SEAT Cupra Leon's drove rather well when they were an option instead of the 285's.

Vorsprung Durch Technik, no chance.
