How low dare you go

Featured Replies

Only 8 miles below zero but, I'd done another 3 earlier thinking "it'll be fine"

In for a penny - chuck a jerry can in your boot and see just how far you can actually get 😁

Gaz

Got my mk 2 down to 0 before now.
Got my last mk 3 down to 5 miles!

Be interesting to know how much fuel you got in the tank with it at zero.

Done it a couple of times and could squeeze 48 litres into the 50 litre tank so about 15 miles of range left when showing zero.

I have regularly gone 5 litres worth of distance after the trip computer shows zero, probably 50 or even 100 times over the last 14 years without ever running out on both a MK1 and MK2 Octavia.

This one I deliberately ran out on the first tank to see how much further it would go, mines a PD but I would not do so with a common rail injection system.

Well a petrol Vrs will travel quite along way on 50 litres of fuel.

Down to '0' range last time and got 49 litres in when refilling.

Last fill up, mine said 20 miles and I could only squeeze 48 liters in. Based on my mpg (45.7mpg) I could have only have gone 20.1 miles more.

I recently adjusted the setting on VCDS and it's reading my average MPG spot on. Looking forward to seeing what it is again on my time fill up.

Cracking Green Score Tony you must have been sweating:sweat:bricks.

Any contamination in a fuel tank settles at the bottom so when there's next to no fuel left in the tank you risk clogging up the fuel filter, damaging the pump or even the engine itself. And when you do run out then you risk air entering the system which can further lead to damage.

How low dare I go? Well anything less than a half a gallon and I panic.

When do you think the fuel intake is on the tank?  The bottom.  So a full tank or empty tank, its still drawing up fuel from the bottom!

Just don't do this game in a BMW - it is very accurate.  I perfectly planned a journey home once to hit the petrol station when the range would have been between 5-0.  About 1 mile before the garage the road was shut, no signs or notice given.....8 mile detour.  I ran out about 0.5miles from the garage, fuel tank empty and battery totally depleted.  Somehow after a couple of mins it restarted and kangaroo'd onto the petrol station!

50.20 litres went in so, I'd say possibly half a gallon in the filler neck dunno really, that's just an educated guess

Looking back at my Fuelly account I see the maximum I've ever filled was 50.38 litres so, there might be 25-30 miles past zero depending on driving style. TBH although, I can get green scores in the high 90's it's not much fun whereas, 10 deg C outside air temp. & 20 miles range is the best time to have BIG FUN
