It would appear we are getting a dog- 280 Hatch

Recommended Posts

So I am 6 into ownership of my early 2018 280 L&K hatch. Really enjoying the car after years of company car tractors.   Just had service at 16000m , 10k of those are mine and remarkably amongst other things still averaging about 36mpg those 10k miles.

Then “we” have decided we are now getting a dog.

That will be me , the wife , 2 kids and a dog and hatchback.

Ive never had a dog before (wife has).  To all the dog owners how will this Cocker Spaniel ruin my car and do I need to get a Kodiaq now instead? Or are there suitable dog mitigation measures I can take ?

Kids in the boot. Dog on the back seat. Sorted.

I have a three panel dog cover on the back seat that goes from the headrest into the footwell and that protects the seat. Our spaniel sheds though so get used to lots of vacuuming.

@penguin17 has trained his land shark to automatically head for his wife's car and refuse to get into his 280.

Some kind of aversion therapy I suspect...

:D

I don’t know how it happened. I suspect it’s because we brought him home from the breeders in my car and he associates that with being separated from his mother.  I just know that as soon as my tailgate opens, he’s a jibbering mess. He won’t get in the backseats either.

Ah well, the wife’s car it is 😂

Get a travel crate , loads of variations on market and should fit in car easily given size you will need for a cocker spaniel ....... and he/she will probably relax and fall asleep quickly if you are achieving 36mpg in a 280 :)

Currently away with our dog for first time in the new car. Have found the seat we bought to be very good, one like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075D7RHHH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_y1OuDbN4A07NE

Keeps the dog contained and the seat cleaned. Have found there is space for that, our daughter and one of the grandparents on the back row without being too squashed (9 year old and 71 year old) so as long as your kids aren’t both big teenagers should be fine.

Bought a similar one for our dog and he won't stay in it for more than 30 seconds so that went in the bin.

When I had the Superb estate I bought a fabric dog 'crate'. Imagine my surprise to find his head poking over the back seats as he'd chewed his way through the door on the first trip out.  He now just gets the entire back seat and is hooked into the seatbelt by a harness.

I forgot to mention in my first reply that I bought the rubber tunnel cover from Superskoda (looks like half a flaccid Darth Vader helmet) and that plus some old rubber mats in the rear footwells keeps some of the drool off the carpet if we're eating in the car. He does still drool onto the centre air vent though...

Anybody wanna buy a dog? :giggle:

You are just getting the wrong dog. A dog like a poodle doesn't shed hair so the worst aspect of keeping the car clean doesn't apply.  An old carpet on the boot floor of my estate and it's good to go.   A small dog like a spaniel should be able to live in the boot of a hatchback no problem.

For me it does mean the sliding load area cover has been removed and stored in the attic, Any small items left in the boot I don't want on show go under the raised floor.

As above. I have a sprocker (half cocker/half springer). curls up in a dog cage in the boot with no issues whatsoever. As it's a cage it also means there no chance of anything else hurting her if it moves around the boot.

I have a blanket on the back seat for my dog. Apart from hair and mud there are no problems. I reward her with some peanut butter when I come back from leaving her in the car for brief periods and not having eaten the car. The REST button is great for hotter days but only for a few minutes
