Which Front Shock absorbers?

Featured Replies

I've got a 2014 2.0 TD 4x4 black Edition yeti with a front shock that's got a slight oil leak, so I've decided to change them both to be on the safe side I've measured the top of the Shock with a calipers at 55mm. However I've emailed a few sellers on eBay and on-line auto retailers with the measurements and the OEM number (1K0 412 022 E) but each one says they can't match the OEM number to what they have. when I've used the OEM number to search all I get is a list of used shocks. Can anyone help me find a replacement?

Welcome.

Can you not just go to a Local Motor factor, give them that number but also your reg number and see what they see,

or do you know someone to get them from https://tps.trade

Or even a VAG/Skoda dealer?

^^^ Always the Simply Clever thing to do, then you know what the cost is if getting genuine parts from them.

Not always more expensive than buying from elsewhere by mail order.

I have the same part number on my strut. the strut 55 or 50mm is universal and timeless confusion across all VW owners at various forums. But you should be measuring the bottom of the strut which sits in to the knuckle housing than at the top. If you do measure, please drop me a msg. i am looking to replace as well.

@mechophile - I'm pretty sure you should be measuring the diameter not the circumference of the strut.

That being said:

- a 50mm strut will have a ~157mm circumference

- a 55mm strut will have a ~172mm circumference

You can even make a cardboard template or two as described here: https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/st-suspension-st-x-lowering-coilover-kit-for-mk5-mk6-platform-vehicles.html

@langers2k - the above measurement is taken by turning the wheel to the extreme right and get into the wheel well with one hand to hold the tape. I bet you cant measure diameter with one hand :) . i did take circumference and did the C=pi x d. Yet, i am not confident i got the size right. the circumference indeed measure about 170mm like you have said. it turns out to be 54.xx mm. i am replacing pads in a couple of days and planning to get the strut assembly out and measure. Also, i learnt there are other ways of finding the strut size. by measuring the brake discs.

280 mm discs will have 50mm and 288 mm and 312 mm have 55mm. another way to find apparently from the vw forum info is, the code on the brake calipers. FS111 or ATE. However, there is nothing on my brake calipers when i checked without getting the wheel off.

Did you ever solve this, I have the same issue trying to get a replacement shock absorber with that very same part number?

Just call TPS guys, they are very helpful. Or as said the local dealer, but TPS supply them so...

Front shocks tend to have part numbers with 413 031 XX as the last 8 characters, and often have more than one sticker on them. Look for another with the suggested partial part number.

(XX being unknown to me, and usually the sole difference in part number amongst the whole family of variants). Given reg or VIN I could look up your specific PN.

Update: my mechanic tried to fit them but apparantly they were incorrect. I bought them from AUTODOC. They’ll be going straight back. My mechanic ordered the correct parts from TPS.

Finding the correct Bilstein B4 front shock absorbers for the Yeti is straightforward, as shown below. It just depends whether the front struts are 50mm or 55mm.

280x22mm front brake discs (build code 1ZF) use 50mm struts. (77kW/105PS to 92kW/125PS)

288x25mm front brake discs (build code 1ZE) use 55mm struts. (103kW/140PS to 118kW/160PS)

312x25mm front brake discs (build code 1ZA) use 55mm struts. (125kW/170PS)

Check the Yeti's build codes to be sure what front brake discs are fitted, in case the above information matching the front brake disc sizes to the engine power isn't correct in all cases.

Not everyone has trouble finding suitable aftermarket replacement shock absorbers for the Yeti.

All Yeti models are covered by the below three Bilstein B4 shock absorbers. The selection of the front shock absorbers depends on whether the struts are 50mm or 55mm. The rear shock absorbers are the same for all models.

Fine but I found that after market shocks did not drive or ride as smoothly as the original Skoda shocks. Ended up swapping the replaced Bilstein shocks with genuine Skoda shocks and everything returned to a more comfortable ride.

The aftermarket shock absorber market do tend to sell each of their shock absorbers to cover a large range of OEM part numbers, so genuine Skoda shock absorbers should in many cases be better optimized to the springs that Skoda has matched them with.
