How can I find out which rear spring colour bands were originally fitted?

Featured Replies

I had my rear springs replaced on my 2012 superb estate II 170 bhp while abroad on holiday but I'm not convinced they used the correct ones as when loaded the car still sits rather low at the back.

Since I don't have the original springs I cannot see what colour bands that they had.

Looking here https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/superb/sup/2012-632/5/511-511000/ shows me loads of colour variations but it is not clear which is for which car which.

I 'think' it might be OEM 1K0 511 115DF, but only because one retailer listed this one as being a skoda OEM amongst many others that they said also fit, although they were different lengths,  and this thread https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/443268-coil-springs-length/ seems to suggest 1K0 511 115DF is correct

Can anyone tell me how I can find out what springs (OEM number or colour bands) were originally fitted to this car?

(I suppose I could go to a dealer, have the springs replaced again and look underneath at the bands they fit, but I can't afford a second mortgage!)

You need a full list of PR-codes for your car, the sticker in the boot only has a subset that may or may not include the ones your interested in.

A friendly dealer might provide them otherwise an hours access to erwin will.

Dont get original springs they are a weak spot on the estate

Im on my 3rd pair of rears thinking I am doing the right thing replacing with O.E.

The protection paint is so thin on them I even gave my second set a coats of underseal to try and protect them.     It didnt

Go for KYB rear springs from eBay about £50 the pair much better quality and mine seem to be lasting on last inspection and have lasted longer than the first 2 pairs of originals

I think part of the problem is that there are different stiffness options available and it's not obvious which ones are which. A post on another thread made me go back to the build list on mine to look: mine was fitted with Weight Range 6 springs (PR-0YF), which are one of the softest options. Doing some digging gives the following list of PR codes and the matching weight range.

PRCode: 0YA = Weight range 1 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YB = Weight range 2 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YC = Weight range 3 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YD = Weight range 4 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YE = Weight range 5 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YF = Weight range 6 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YG = Weight range 7 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YH = Weight range 8 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YJ = Weight range 9 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YK = Weight range 10 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YL = Weight range 11 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YM = Weight range 12 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YN = Weight range 13 installation control only no requirement forecast
PRCode: 0YP = Weight range 14 installation control only no requirement forecast

Lower weight range means a softer spring. ETKA doesn't list all of these either, and it's possible not all are valid for the combi. It's also likely, from a quick glance at ETKA, that there are certain spring/damper combinations i.e. not every spring can be paired with every damper.

Annoyingly I found this out a few months after replacing springs and dampers due to low ride height - it still looks a bit low though I haven't measured. If I'd known this when ordering the springs I'd have gone for a stiffer option.

Phone  TPS, a good advisor will let you know your weight range and the colours for the springs originally fitted to your car, mine was weight range 10, was gonna go for 14 but opted for the spring assisters instead which are working perfectly. Still on original springs which have very little corrosion but it’s done less than 50K.

I will prob replace with Bilstein to go with the B6 shocks when they do go.

@3T51704x4

Out of interest which spring assisters did you get? I was toying with this idea myself. A lot of the time my car is empty but quite frequently it is packed to the gills with heavy mountaineering equipment, ropes, tents etc. Boot and back seat are full and I have a huge top box and sometimes two bikes on the tow ball. On the motorway its not so bad but on smaller bumpy roads in the Alps or up in Scotland  my tow bar hits the ground. So spring assisters that only come into play when the car is loaded wmight be a good idea.

@chimaera

Useful table, thanks. Ill use that to see If I can find their colours and then select some KYB  or Bilstein springs, since I tend to agree with DEL80Y that the original ones seemed too soft anyway.

I don't know which make they fitted in France, they might have been OEM  - it was expensive enough (but I didn't fancy changing them myself in a campsite! )

@iceman2 We are in the French Alps now with the new springs, look at my recent post for details, no idea how to link it in the thread but it was in the last week or two.

Look for Combi rear suspension mod for French trip on page two of Superb II forum.

Ha! I love the last photo in that thread.

Except for the colour of the car, that looks exactly like my Superb a few weeks ago, same top box,  same bike carrier and same removable tow bar that hits the ground!

So I think I'll look into fitting those same MAD spring assists.

BTW the French garage also fitted the springs upside down and pulled the metal strut off the plastic stud of NS the ride height sensor. I wondered why my lights were suddenly pointing at the sky.

Did you need to tell your insurance company about the spring alteration?  I wonder if it counts as a 'modification'.

The colour nearly stopped me buying the car, but it had every extra for the year bar the sunroof which I didn’t want and just over 30K on the clock with one owner.

I’ve grown to like the colour.

I fitted a westfalia removable bar after that holiday as that one in the picture did scrape badly.

The French garage prob didn’t see the sensor, or like mine was rusted solid.

Very very please with the result of the mod.
