  • Ok. Having come from a Disco 4 and the associated mega threads on D4 pages regarding oil I have read this one with interest.    I definitely do not want to upset anyone and everyone has view

  • Remember to check the tyre pressures on collection date the muppets who did my tyre pressures set them to 3.5bar all round which is dangerous on a performance model at nearly 50lb/psi. Idiots.

I use this Long Life oil from Halfords £48 for 5 litres.

Thanks Shy! 👍

Just want a 1ltr bottle to keep in the boot for topping up purposes. A 5ltr bottle won't fit in the steel canteen box in the boot.

Irony bought it 6 months ago since last service still unopened because the car refuses to use any oil now unlike the 1.25 litres it consumed during the first 18,500 miles.

I put my reg (2018 245 vrs) into a couple of sites and this comes up … TITAN Supersyn LONGLIFE SAE 5W-40

Probably available in local motoring shops if you don't want to do the online bit.  I saw 2 x 5ltr on Ebay for £32 which is a very good deal if you do your own oil changes.

The oil manufacturer advises

Capacity:
Capacity 6,6 litre Dry fill
Capacity 5,7 litre Service fill
Use:
Normal
Intervals:
Change 15000 km/ 12 months

If you want to go the 2 year servicing plan you need TITAN GT1 PRO C-3 SAE 5W-30 (XTL-Technology)

Personally I think changing the oil every 12 months is a very good idea on any performance vehicle.

For 18 months they left the factory with VW508/509 as VW Group needed the WLTP / RDE results.

if you use 5w 30 FS III Long life up to yourselves.

as to 5w 40 FS Long Life then that was never Skoda's Recommendation.

Use genuine Skoda oil, VW507.00, 5W-30...

Or buy 5 litres for a lot less money, and decant it into a more suitable container to suit your boot arrangement...

Good thinking batman.

Just one thing. Does the oil left in the bigger bottle deteriorate due to moisture getting in?

@TheWanderer

It is VW 508 in your engine, using VW507 to top up is OK if you are going to be servicing soon and then maybe going to have VW507 used at the service,

but if you have the car on Variable / Flexible Servicing and going 18,000-20,000 miles between services i would be putting in VW508 for top ups.

I can't remember which one it's on, I'll have to take a peek at the infotainment system in the morning.

?

How many miles has your car done,

& did you ask them to change your car from Variable Servicing?  Have you got a Service Plan so now on Fixed Servicing.

My owners manual helpfully tells me to consult a specialist garage to find out which oil to use, so I'm none the wiser. Does anyone know for sure what oil specification a petrol 245 vrs should be using please?

Just over 3250. Not much as it had a 6 week lay up, due to a hip replacement operation and so no driving for 6-7 weeks, its been to Nottingham, Derbyshire and Warwickshire and Somerset since then.

The owners manual available via one of the Skoda apps shows VW 508 for my 2017 car (July car, so using the May 17 manual revision), same as @Roottootemoot posted earlier

Looking at the table above I'm going to need 0w20 so over to Mobil's website which helps you with an oil finder thing. Put my reg in and it suggests oil that doesn't meet 508 00 - but they sell oil that does. 172x257-mobil-esp-x2-0w-20-v3.ashxSo that's clear then. Errrr hang on ...

I'll be very surprised if this wasn't factory filled with 508 spec 0W20.

The Factories used VW508/509 since late 2017 and into 2018 because they could not risk any imports being retested and not meeting the Emissions figures.

0w 20 FS IV is about them getting the WLTP and RDE results.   Not about the GPF or DPF's.

I've done a couple of top ups and no issues apart from last Saturday when the car suddenly about oil sensor failure and start-stop system failure.

I did another top up, but it didn't stop the fault, so called Skoda Assist out in case it was major, bloody car then wouldn't replicate the fault it has had another very small top up and everything  is fine.

Not sure how much more to add (if any) and would there be any detrimental consequences if I accidentally over filled it very slightly.

I've found another oil that meets the spec, Fuchs Titan GT1 EVO 0w-20 Premium Performance Engine Oil - 5 Litres

From the opie oils website. car needs 5.7 ltrs which makes it a pain in the wallet ...

1 Litre £11.95 (£9.96 ex)
2 x 1 Litre £23.50 (£19.58 ex)
3 x 1 Litre £34.99 (£29.16 ex)
5 Litres £36.95 (£30.79 ex)
2 x 5 Litres £72.95 (£60.79 ex)
3 x 5 Litres £108.95 (£90.79 ex)

Do not ever overfill oil, and check the oil At Operating Temperature, not just when warm.

Then know where it is when Stone Cold with an engine that is parked on the flat and not been started.

Are you topping up, or fully changing out the oil?

As mentioned, your car left the factory with 0W-20 (VW508.00), all in an effort to meet stringent emissions targets. The vast majority (not all) UK-based Skoda franchised dealers when servicing your car will replace it with 5W-30 (VW507.00). Either Castrol branded, or VAG's own Quantum brand (illustrated above), which is produced by Fuchs.

The advantages and disadvantages of different oil viscosity will always divide opinion, but my preference is engine and turbo lubrication / longevity, less so emissions. When my dealer confirmed they'd used VW507.00 to replace the factory filled VW508.00 on my 1.4 TSI at it's first service I was happy to be getting (what I believe) to be the better oil for my needs.

Genuine VAG 0W-20 oil is notoriously difficult to buy, and therefore exorbitantly expensive, mainly due to no one using it, including the VAG franchised dealer network. There was a thread recently where a Kodiaq's service had to be postponed as the dealer had to order the oil in. As mentioned the vast majority of dealers are using VW507.00 instead.

If the oil in your car is original i.e VW508.00 (0W-20), then for top ups I would stick to the same oil, if swapping it out completely i.e. DIY service, then I'd be replacing it with VW507.00 (5W-30) @ £24 for 5 litres of genuine VAG Quantum branded oil.

I tracked some 0W-20 oil down for my Kodiaq online several months ago to top-up with, but now it's had it's first service and is now running on 5W-30 there is lots of choice that meets the VW507.00 specifications for a lot more sensible price.

Here is Castrol VW508.00 (0W-20), interestingly from Horton's Skoda themselves, being sold on eBay for not daft money...

image.thumb.png.a00d16967743944e719a416d9640188c.png

Or genuine VAG equivalent, which is likely to be the exact same Castrol oil (or Fuch's as per their own-branded Quantum oil) in a different bottle...

image.thumb.png.7527fc548b7a5de95b1c71e3fd553377.png

Or just swap out the whole lot and put this in instead, again from a Skoda main dealer based in Scotland...

So that's 508 when topping up a new TSI before the first oil change service and probably 507 after it?

My local dealer confirmed the factory water like 0W-20 was replaced with slightly thicker viscosity 5W-30 which probably explains why it has used no oil in the last 8 months and 8,000 miles compared to using 1.25 litres topping up with the thin original keep the emissions low stuff from the factory. Makes sense to me.
