Engine oil for RS245

Did the Master Tech tell you who gives them permission to use 5w30 oil as an option instead of 0w20 oil.  Is it the Dealer ship, Skoda UK, the factory or have they just made it up............?

He said they have a spec sheet which says which engine can take the two oils they keep in stock. He did say the 0w20 should give slightly better fuel consumption.

  • If you buy 0w20 you will be a regular repeat customer.

  • Ok. Having come from a Disco 4 and the associated mega threads on D4 pages regarding oil I have read this one with interest.    I definitely do not want to upset anyone and everyone has view

  • Remember to check the tyre pressures on collection date the muppets who did my tyre pressures set them to 3.5bar all round which is dangerous on a performance model at nearly 50lb/psi. Idiots.

@shyVRS245

Was that his words then 'should give slightly better fuel consumption'?

VW should have said that then, and not gone on about emissions,  just said we changed the viscosity to make the WLTP / RDE look better.

George that is exactly what he said regarding fuel consumption but as we know emissions/co2 are directly related to fuel consumption anyway.;)

Just got a 5L Fuchs Titan GT1 EVO 0w-20 Premium for £29.99 on Ebay.

If you're quick you can get selected oils with a discount by entering the code PLETHORA during checkout (not available with pay after delivery).

Master Tech did mention that Quantum oil was made by Castrol but is now made by Fuchs if that helps peoples buying decision.:)

Yeah my first effort was CSATROL.:shake:

Oh, I thought it might have involved Fuchs.

The 0w20 is thinner, which means less resistance and pumping losses.

they equal lower emissions values/fuel economy which really matters too.

the leaflet says vw504 can be used and frankly I would rather have the slightly thicker oil as it’s not like we’re artic temperatures.

Ok. Having come from a Disco 4 and the associated mega threads on D4 pages regarding oil I have read this one with interest.

I definitely do not want to upset anyone and everyone has views and opinions on oil and it can be quite divisive!

But these things I do know! From being trained as a tech and working in a dealer workshop and being a service advisor back in the day!

1 Any engine least of all the EA 888 will not go “bang” because 5W30 is being run instead of 0W20. If in the likely event an engine did go “bang” it would have nothing to do with the above lubricants. The operating parameters of the engine and it’s lubrication are wide. Skoda could or would not wriggle out of anything as dealers and workshops put what they have most of in the car! Also the fact that if you put your reg into most of the major oil manufacturers it comes back as 5W30!

It is a highly unlikely scenario.

The Disco 4 snaps it’s crank with an alarming regularity. Oil type and condition has nothing to do with it. It’s a harmonic vibration which does it. But it still does not stop peeps changing the oil every 3K! And arguing infinitum about what grade!

2 0W20 is put in for one reason only. Less friction to reduce emissions. End of.

3 I make this assumption with all my new vehicles. Mostly bikes, my vRS will only my 2nd ever new car. The oil put in at the factory is utter crap. On return from the dealer and a cool down the oil and filter will be replaced. With OEM+ Oil and Filter. In my case this will be  Castrol Edge 5W/30 with a VAG filter.

My 5p worth!

2 Days till vRS time!

"The oil put in at the factory is utter crap."

I think you need to elaborate on that statement.

And they say things are idiotproof.

Well you can bet humanity with all of its ingenuity will provide us all with a new, improved and generally better idiot. And it seems that you got one doing your tyres.

The Tyres are at 50psi at the factory before transportation, for fastening down. (and transport blocks to stop bounce.)

So at the PDI they were not set at 50psi, they were just not deflated to a safe pressure.

I don't know, you say that the clowns at Guildford Tyres put 3.4 bar into my tyres last time I did the winter ➡️ summer swap over.

It was only when I drove it away did I notice that it wasn't handling correctly and stopped, checked out the pressure and corrected them (all 4), they got a rather cross phone call about it.

As I said it is an assumption.

But mass produced vehicles costed to the last penny.

Do you really think VAG are going to put primo oil in every vehicle they build?

Its cheap to do and has the benefit of removing any excess metals from machining processes in the engine manufacture stage and replacing with fresh metal free oil.

@andygman  You gave a wee CV higher up in a post,

a Tech in a Dealership Workshop & a Service Adviser, so were you a Time Served Technician / Mechanic?

Yes i think they put in Primo oil,  and crap ECO Tyres.

Assumption is the mother of all f ups.

The oil is normally good for cars getting driven in / run in, thrashed from new.  It is not guff oil, sometimes it was good to change at 5,000 - 8,000 miles for better fuel economy.

Now the 0w 20 FS IV is in there incase the cars or a sample is retested at Import, ie in the UK because VW were caught as liars and cheats.

Cars have been getting Retested to see if a model matches an identical models WLTP Certificated figures.

VW Group admitted eventually in 2016 after investigation that there were Implausible / Irregular C02 figures on some Euro 6 Petrol & Diesels in Audi's, VW's and SEATs, but not Skoda.

Just a mix up, error, fuddle not fiddle, but they held back cars, discontinued some and made changes to emission figures in some others.

Hence with the Euro 5 defeat device issue and the Euro 6, errors, they paid just 1.1 million to the UK Government towards testing their imports.

Never paid the next Million plus though.

In the course of the investigation concerning defeat devices in Volkswagen’s diesel vehicles, the EPA and the California Air Resources Board discovered that the company employed software to manage vehicle transmissions in gasoline vehicles. This software causes the transmission to shift gears during the EPA-prescribed emissions test in a manner that sometimes optimizes fuel economy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the test, but not under normal driving conditions.

Doesn't sound like a mix-up to me, sounds like deliberate cheat software...

Yes already uncovered in Europe on some of the Audi's, 2nd defeat devices and Auto boxes.  lets just say S-tronic / DSG because as it was being uncovered there was people not even understanding the 2008-2015 cheating / fraud.

Yes I was. Qualified with back in the day as a long time has passed. It has little relevance to my post other than to indicate that I understand how dealers operate. Primo oil but crap tyres? The crap tyres reinforces my theory of buying the cheapest components a available at the time! It matters not. It’s my assumption and I own it. Oil and filter changed next Tuesday. 👍😃

The cars have to last the time of lease / fleet, Oil matters for warranty issues.  Used at 3 years on, VW could not care less,

which is why German Manufacturers engines are among the worst out of warranty.

Tyres do not matter to VW Group, they fit new with Brand Names, job done.

I'm going to go with the flow - pardon the pun - and do an oil and filter change pretty soon to 5w30, my next question will be how do I reset the service interval widget. 😁
