Chain rattle

Featured Replies

Greetings,

Having searched far and wide, nothing has satisfied me with regards to answering this question:

Is very very occasional chain rattle, lasting <1 second anything to be concerned about on a 63 plate 1.2 tsi?

I've heard it twice in 9 months (and I listen HARD... 🙄)

All the usual stuff has been checked (oil filter torque etc).

I understand the main concerns were with early cars pre 2012 which didn't have the modified chains fitted and the anti jump fittings. Put a worrier to rest....

@Shaunieboy

You do not say how many miles your Yeti has done, and is it on variable servicing intervals or fixed / annual servicing / oil changes?

I would stop using VW504  5w 30 FS III (long life oil)  and at the next oil and filter change use VW502 so 5w 40 Full Synthetic.

Just shy of 40k, most recent service was about 4k/8 months ago-ish by a main skoda stealer.

I requested 5w40 at the time.... it's a shame that the thought comes so easily, that they put 5w30 in....

It happened yesterday firing up after a brisk long run and then a stop of about 5 hours. Hot day, very hot thin oil, nice amount of time for it to drain back?

A faulty non return valve in the oil filter could cause that.
I had to replace an oil filter I had just fitted so it's not just the old ones that fail.

< 1 sec for oil pressure ?!  Is that a problem?.

If it helps ease your mind, i've just had the chain and tensioner replaced on my early 2012 1.2 Tsi with 98k miles at a Skoda dealer. Best price I could find was £751.

Mine had a rattle on startup which varied and I decided not to take the chance any more.

It still has a short (1s as you have?) Cold start noise, but my logic is it must be normal as others have described. If its gets worse I'm entitled to go back to the dealer as the work is warranted.

If i'd not had the chain swapped you are into the guesswork of noises and engine damage ?

@Prezafab

Was your 1.2TSI of the build date covered by the TPI and is the Upgrade Kit your engine had fitted?

Cheers for the replies so far all. I think I'm concerned about nothing really, just that it was definitely the chain sound, as short lived and as infrequent as it was. You can understand why people get worried with all of the posts about the issue. Admittedly, these rattles seem to be lasting 5 seconds + or even constantly.

Our Yeti is one of the very last with the chain driven 1.2tsi, and is Skoda Approved on a 63 plate. Serviced at main dealers every year or <8k ish

My 63 plate Roomster 1.2tsi used to rattle for a second after starting from cold.  It also rattled occasionally after starting from hot.  The rattle disappeared after oil & filter were changed.  I'm guessing drain-down of oil from the hydraulic tappets caused the rattle.  I personally would only be concerned if the rattle went on for longer than a second and occurred every time the engine was started.

My Nov 2013 1.2 TSI also rattles - probably about 5 in every 10 starts on a cold start for about 1-2 seconds. It has always done it since I had it when it was a year old, and has been dealer serviced every 12 months. (service has never seemed to change the effect) Now has about 24,000 miles on the clock..... I often wonder if they could put a delay in the ignition software so it can crank up oil pressure on the starter before it actually fires up when its cold? -Especially as it seems to rev quite high on its own when cold.
