Handbrake holding power

Featured Replies

I'm having trouble holding the car on my sloping drive - been going on for years.  I have to use chocks/bricks to stop it creeping

I've greased the caliper sliders, wound the pistons in and out, checked the handbrake cable is free, checked the handbrake shroud is free, all looks good.

I asked my local dealer to look at it on a recent service - told no issues.

Got my local garage to look, and again - no issues.

This is with cold discs.

On the road the hand brake has no bite when rolling as if the pads are not effective.

Has anyone had any experience of a pad with "bite", rather than the OEM ones?

Mind if I ask how you apply the handbrake?  I was taught at an early age that to get the handbrake to hold firm it is best to firmly press the foot brake first, then apply the handbrake. The foot brake system is far more powerful and ‘preloads’ the rear calipers - the handbrake then holds this preloaded pressure.  I’ve never had a car move (and I’ve had some pretty slopey drives!).

You can also park it in gear (something I very rarely do).

Thanks, yes, do all that - I also hold the button down to avoid pawl/clicky noises !

That's why I'm thinking pad material. I have a guy up the road who re-lines brakes and all sorts of big machinery. He re-lines pads on my SJ with some very soft material that wears out quickly, doesn't wear the discs, but is very effective in water/mud etc.

I might try him for advice.

OEM pads on mine have considerable bite, holding the car easily on my steep drive with just a "normal" pull of the handbrake lever.

Is it possible yours has been fitted with non-OEM pads at some time?

Mmm, that's what I'm thinking. I replaced the rear pads some time ago with some from a local factor - Pagid.

Pagid.

Or, as we also call them, OEM. (if genuine, and I'm not suggesting deliberate deception by the factor here)

Is it the "blind" at the base of the handbrake lever binding.
That has caused several MOT failures, does the handbrake lever move freely.
Handbrake should hold anything at 3 clicks.

See post #1 - you call it a blind, I called it a shroud!

Ah... a "glass half empty" kind of guy!
