Brand of diesel for new diesel driver

You can always use Petrol Eco Max to avoid using and paying extra for "Super Unleaded" which I do if I'm going to go long distances, otherwise it gets bog standard unleaded petrol from any forecourt whether it be Tesco, JS,  Shell, Esso et al.

However this thread is about diesel, so I'll shut up.

Is it the same?  Genuinely curious.  Pretty sure super diesel just has an additive package to boost the cetane. But I always assumed with petrol it was a better base fuel (and so buying basic + adding treatment isn't quite the same). I'm probably wrong though.

I'll let you know when I next do a long haul trip to either the West of England (WoE) or East Midlands/North West which are usually done out & back in a day and are >300 miles.

I'll brim the tank and add 50 ml of Eco Max Petrol and see what I get.

As long as the diesel meets the BS EN590 standard for diesel fuel you'll be fine.  It usually says it on the pump.

I use Costco when ever possible as it's usually the cheapest.

My best ever mpg was with Tesco though on that occasion  the Gods were with - long steady uninterrupted 65-70mph motorway for about 350 miles on a nice day.

I have friends who swear by Shell V-power but having worked the oil additive industry,  the variety of alternative additives they use are disproportionately expensive considering the circumstances most cars find themselves in.  Travelling an extra 250m on a tankful of fuel is for F1 only.....

I think I'm correct in saying Tesco have a stake in Greenergy whose standard diesel contains 7% biodiesel.  I'm not sure which Skodas can take the newer 20% biodiesel.  It's probably best to play safe and avoid it unless you're certain your car's fuel line seals are suitable.
