Thanks Gaz

👍

Go with whatever is cheapest/most convenient to where you live/work for filling up. All my cars have been run exclusively on supermarket fuel, predominantly Tesco (both petrols + diesels) and never had any issues.

Diesel fuel is all made to the same standard and all comes from the same refineries.

The only thing you are paying for with the big brands are more advanced additives. These additives come with various claims like keeping your engine/injectors cleaner and extra mpg to name a few.

You can discuss fuels till the cows come home but its all down to personal preference really rather than any quantifiable numbers. Its a bit like buying bottled water vs. getting it out of a tap, its still water only one costs a lot more and doesn't have any measurable benefits.

Royal Dutch Shell's additive package on Standard Diesel / Derv is not anything more special than ESSO standard diesel and Greenergy is supplying that, the same Greenergy that Tesco partly own and that imports stock fuels with partner Royal Dutch Shell.

BP's standard diesel will be no better than Morrisons, & Gulf no better than Sainsburys.

Premium Diesel like Shell V-Power is a different thing and a different additive package that you need to consider yourself if any better.

Thanks Superb and rootoot

sounds like I  can use any diesel

All my cars and motorbikes have always had Shell V Power thrown in them, that's my local petrol station. The asda I shop at does have a petrol station added on, but I paid a lot for both my car and my motorbikes, so I don't wish to fill them there. It may make a difference with Shell V Power diesel, it may not, but I'm happy to spend that little bit extra.

It's those magical additives which they put in which you do pay extra for. Some people believe in them, others think they're like snakeoil. You may be able to get similar results with the likes of redex or Wynns.

Does adblue have some compensation instead of redecorates or Wynns

Adblue is an emissions control substance, BUT if you're to prevent fuel from being incompletely burnt in the first place, that would stop the over usage of the adblue in helping correct those 'dodgy' gases. Another BUT however, is it's more often than not programmed into the car to be spraying it all the time. Doesn't spray a dramatic amount and a tank usually lasts a thousand miles (it did my last tranny van).

It's needed in SCR cars come what may. If the tank is empty, the car won't even start.

@tunedude   I take it your motorbikes are not diesels so you are putting 99 ron petrol in them.

Shell V-Power Nitro diesel is easy enough to see if worth paying so much extra over Shell Diesel or any others, you just fill the tank and drive.

@Stevetewkesbury

You do not have a TDI  that has SCR so with an AdBlue tank so that is not something you need to buy and it does not go in the fuel tank.

If I bought diesel in France (some time ago now) the car always seemed to go considerably further than with the stuff in the UK.

Of course now fuel in France is insanely expensive, making the UK seem quite cheap by comparison.

I was going to fill up (petrol in my case) in Calais, but when I saw the price and worked it out it was £1.39 a litre! My mate was going to fill his diesel Jaguar up, but decided to wait until he got back to the UK and stop off at Ashford where it was much cheaper compared to the £1.45 per litre there.

Oh aye yeah, the motorbikes are petrols and certainly my beamer has a map programmed into the ecu for higher RON fuel.

It's my experiences of seeing my uncle taking his car for it's biannual taxi mot which has shown that V Power is better on the emissions side. He's given car's an Italian tune up with both regular and premium diesels, but the results with the premium diesels are much clearer to see; less exhaust smoke and a slightly quieter engine note. So I do feel those 'additives' in the car do make a difference. He's on such a budget that using Asda's diesel works out cheaper in the long run (he does on average 300 miles a shift).

Thanks

I go to whatever is convenient, my local garage is Texaco, my local Supermarket is Sainsburys, runs just fine on either.

Once every four or five fill ups I treat her to some of the 'better' grade diesel (V Power or similar) which i understand has detergents n stuff in it. I don't believe its my imagination but she seems to run a tad smoother on it...

Or you can pop in a shot of Millers Eco Max for diesel or Redex for diesel.

You shouldn't really need to though. I did use Eco Max when I had a diesel and it did seem to make a slight difference in range, but that may have been a placebo effect.

I had a high mileage Passat with the 140ps 2.0 common rail engine.  Only ran it on the cheapest supermarket stuff to start with.  Started having an occasional "mis-fire" / rough running when cold - garage thought injectors but recommended I try additives / posh fuel first.  Put a few tanks of BP Ultimate diesel through it and it totally stopped the mis-fire, but also ran much quieter / smoother and seemed faster to me.  I then switched to using cheap diesel but adding Millers Diesel Power Ecomax which had the same effect but cheaper. Also tried switching back to plain supermarket diesel for a bit and the rough running came back so confident it made a difference.  Ran it for another 20k miles, always with additive, before part-exing it and it was 100% reliable.

I also used to put posh diesel into my Fabia vRS 1.9 PD and could swear it felt faster / smoother.

However, my wife's much lower mileage 170ps 2.0 CR Yeti I can't tell the difference on posh diesel.

I've tried V-Power / Tesco 99 on various turbo petrol cars though and never ever noticed a difference (although foolishly I still use it on fast petrols, out of superstition).

You can always use Petrol Eco Max to avoid using and paying extra for "Super Unleaded" which I do if I'm going to go long distances, otherwise it gets bog standard unleaded petrol from any forecourt whether it be Tesco, JS,  Shell, Esso et al.

However this thread is about diesel, so I'll shut up.
