its the same material you find when you unpack consoles, microwaves etc to protect from damage.

So its on the new filter or the one in the car?

i apologise, got a feeling you are talking about the frame where the filter goes on.

the polystyrene i was talking about is the part that is covering the whole dashboard under the passenger seat, the filter is behind the polystyrene.

very sorry for the confusion.

Must be a sound deadening thing, never come across it. I did think you meant it was on the filter sorry. Someone will be along who has changed the filter on a Fabia soon … I think I saw a thread the other day with the world's dirtiest pollen filter and from memory that was on a Fabia.

Here's the thread, sorry it was a mk1 Fabia but could it be the same? Send the OP a message see if they can help.

yeah i didnt realise i had a pollen filter till my filter arrived and it was the wrong one that goes in the engine bay.

whenever i put the air con on, it gave a smell so hopefully this will eliminate the problem.

I have the bad habit of spraying a dash of aftershave on a pollen filter before I stick them in, you only get a whiff for a few days but at least you know they have been changed. If its not been changed for a few years expect quite a bit of debris. I just edited last post with a link, have a look at the filter that came out of the MK1.

The pollen filter cleans all air entering the vehicle, air con on or off. The smell is more likely the air con system needs a clean.

when you say the air con needs cleaning, do you mean i will need to take the car to halfords and they can change/fill it with fresh liquid?

ok heres the update:

i have manged to take the polystyrene cover off but it cracked halfway through it so wasnt impressed with that. i just didnt know how else to take it off without any force 😞

here is the picture of the pollen filter:

it weighed quite abit compare to the new filter, maybe because it was full of debris and whatnot.

very awkward taking the filter out of the slot though.

started the car up and it was much powerful and much colder too, very, very happy :)

cant believe how much difference a filter can make.

Cleaning air con … https://motor.onehowto.com/article/how-to-clean-your-car-s-air-conditioning-system-4982.html

Use something like this … th?id=OPE.nnA0JrbGZDMzAQ300C300&w=300&h=

And remember to set aircon to recirculate, I didn't see it mentioned in the article.

awesome! :)

when you say circulate, do you mean press the button with a picture of a car and arrow coming out of it?

It's recirculate, it has a curly arrow indicating the air going round and round inside the car. No fresh air enters the vehicle at this point. Say I'm with my brother in his car and I am able to deliver a fragrant break of wind, I try and discretely set his air con to recirculate so he gets to enjoy the aroma for longer. For some reason he reacts to this jolly jape with violence. 😁

i will just wait till it arrives. never heard of a bomb before.

i rang garage up to see how much they charge to clean my system and they quoted 80 pound! i asked them what they were going to do and they said they were going to use a bomb.

i was thinking to myself, i could do that myself for 10 pound.

thank you

I've fitted the Frecious version of the Mann pollen filter to both our cars, in the case of my car, just because we use that car for longer journeys, and in the case of my wife's 2015 Polo that has auto AC,  her VW dealership workshop replaced the original carbon coated one for a basic one probably as that car was bought with a 3 year service plan, so cheapest options work best for the workshop! Again these filters tend to be bought at a "good" time pricewise from ECP.

Edit:- maybe something to consider when it comes to next "change time". From the colour of your old one, I'd think that is was carbon coated, the p/n on the end would confirm/disprove that.

Yes there are two filters basic and charcoal coating, clears more crap coming in, re air con cleaners all pretty much the same run engine, put aircon on full and set to recurculate. Put can ester on newspaper in rear foot well set of shut doors leave for ten mins, open car turn off let car air. Job done,
