Glovebox mechanism stuck

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a Skoda Superb 2016 model, and somehow the part that is meant to keep the glovebox closed has got wedged in there. I have tried using some pliers to extract it but it is too far in. Has anyone else come across this before?

I phoned my Skoda garage as it is still under warranty, they said it will cost me £132 for a one hour diagnosis to determine if it is covered by warranty or not. If it is not covered under warranty then I will be liable for the £132 PLUS whatever the cost is to fix it.

I would rather not have to pay this (in my opinion) unreasonable fee and try and fix it myself.

Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

There must be a way to separate the inner from the outer skin so you can get to the mechanism?

What is it with this car and the glovebox, did they blow the budget with the umbrellas?

This diagnostic lark is getting silly. Not long ago the service tech would come out to the car with you and say, yes it's broken. How can that cost £132?

Try something like these, small hook and pick tool. They are quite strong and you will be able to stick one into the catch and give it a pretty hard pull to dislodge it. Spray the darn thing with some silicone first.

Just had a look at mine, I take back what I said, there seems to be no way into those two pins. Strange design.

Try what VRS says. Good luck!

Thanks everyone - I have had a go at sliding something down the side, but can't seem to get it out. I have booked it in with Skoda as I am fairly confident it should be able to be fixed under warranty. VRS - one of those tools might be a good idea but I am worried if I do too much damage and can't get it unstuck then it may void the warranty?

Hello - just to update everyone, I went ahead and took the gamble with the £132 inspection cost and it turns out that it is a manufacturing defect and is being replaced under warranty! The glovebox replacement costs £316 so I'm glad I'm not having to pay that

Thanks for the help

As it should! The glovebox cover has failed at it's only task, a warranty job all day long.

Does the replacement still have the wonky gaps at the end furthest from the catch?

I actually think it's by design

Both my S3's have suffered with it.  The same as any other S3 I've checked.  The MY20 facelifted L&K at my local dealers was the same.

Did you get the £132 back? I've been to my dealers countless times for them to diagnose things, never paid a penny whether it was fixed or not....

I can't say I've noticed any wonky gaps

And yes, the £132 back as well! 😀

My local dealer has refused to cover a new glovebox to fix the obvious wonky gap, claiming that my used car warranty doesn't cover "interior trim"

I happen to know that the glovebox has been faulty since new......it's my boss's old car, he just never bothered to raise the issue with them.

Skoda really don't come out of these situations looking good do they.  The many many stories like this that I have read really do put me off buying a skoda which I had planned to do next year.

@DB72 I fear it may be the same with many other car manufacturers...

You might be right but the glove box issue is clearly a design flaw so skoda should just take it on the chin any time one comes into a dealership with the obviously same problem without threatening customers with the inspection fee.

Also I've never had such an obvious design flaw with any brand of car I've owned.
