Changing driveshaft

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I'm currently changing the driveshaft of the right side.

But I’m in trouble to insert the new one in the differential.

Haynes says it only need to be push in, but, oh boy, that isn't easy.

I wanted to know if it’s possible to use a hammer on the wheel side.

Or is there any other tips and tricks?

Also is it recommended to use the vibration damper?

There are three things that might interfere with a smooth install:

  1. Slightly different outer shaft diameter.
  2. Slightly different seal inner diameter.
  3. Hard safety snap ring.

For inspiration and info see video below.

Not only recommended, it is mandatory.

Hello everybody.

I need help with the drive shaft sealing ring, which is in the gearbox (the differential).

About three weeks ago, I successfully changed my drive shaft (front passenger side).
But at the beginning of this week, I was able to see an oil leak. The oil exits between the drive shaft bell and the differential.

Haynes strongly recommends changing the seal. (which I did not do ... unfortunately).

Now I have removed the drive shaft and the old gasket. The seal stuck so tightly that I could only bring it out in small crumbs.

I bought two sealing rings because I thought they corresponded to the original.

I notice that the first one is wrapped in metal.
The second does not have a hollow surface to pick up the edge (framed in orange on the picture).

i buyed those seals :
Part number 002301227E is wrapped in metal.
Part number 002301227C has a smooth surface and has nearly the same diameter as the edge (framed in orange on the picture).

So my question wich is the good one to use ?
Part number 002301227C ?
Second question: How do I remove the residue from the old seal?
Can i really install the new seal like described by Haynes ???

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have not changed drive shaft seals, but it strikes me that the seals you have are the same, but one has the metal casing seat with it.

Your original seal - does it sit directly into the alloy of the gearbox? I suspect it sits in a metal seat that in turn sits in the gearbox. If so, prise it out alog the edges. This should bring out the old seal as well.

Yes, but residues are blocked at the bottom. It's also impossible to accessed with a screwdriver, even with a toothpick...

I am looking at your photos now. Are you saying that there is a metal cup still in the gearbox that was part of the oil seal - the bit you have arrowed with orange? This just needs to be levered out with a screwdriver - put the end of the driver under the lip and use the other side of the opening as a fulcrum and lever it out. Should not take much force.

I see you have the round spring and bits of rubber out. Are you saying there are more pieces inside the gearbox? If so, to do the job properly, you do need to open up the box..

Looking in a third-party parts catalog we find two codes indeed.

002301227C (40x55x7)

002301227E (40x55x7/8) meaning they might have 7 or 8(?) mm width.

In theory both should be good. In reality things are not so good. Many times I found the outer diameter to be too small.

You need a very strong hook/pick with a well sized handle. Use a little bit of heat too.
