yeti good for towing?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm thinking about getting a 4x4 2tr yeti but need to tow a box trailer (1350kg)  regularly... Is the Yeti up to the job?

Found my old yeti to be excellent for towing (mine was a 4x4 2ltr also). Very stable and secure on the road, I think probably the short rear overhang helps a lot. Only negative I found with mine was the vertical "wedge" type detachable towbar sometimes siezed in situ and needed a little persuasion to get it back out again. Of course that was what it's designed to do, the more stress/strain that goes on it, the tighter it gets.

What make was that?
Skoda Yeti OEM is Westfalia.

The 2 litre 4x4 makes an excellent tow car. As has been said the short rear overhang aids stability; I have happily towed at French motorway speeds with no problems.
Towing our 1100kg caravan with the 150 I can easily get 35mpg when we come down to Cornwall.

Mine had factory prep and then AC fitted the towbar. From memory I believe they offered a choice of 2 bars at that time (2012). A Thule vertical detachable and a horizontal detachable which may have been a westfalia. The Thule was cheaper so went for that one.

I have towed with all 3 of my Yetis ; 110ps manual, 140ps 4X4 DSG and current 1.2DSG. Only 1400Kg caravan but no problems with any of them. Not towing currently as too old but I wouldn't hesitate is saying Yeti is good for towing as long as you are sensible in the weight you tow.

The sticky towbar was no issue really, a blow with a mallet knocked it out.

My  L & K  towed my Fairway 584 with no problem at all. Have now sold the van and bought a campervan. ( still got the Yeti)

What about going uphill on the way home 😀

My slightly modified Yeti has a trailer attached more than it doesn't, 420nm and big brakes does give me a slight edge when towing ;)

I usually  tow an un-braked 700kg trailer, to be honest I can forget its there as it fits within the profile of the car, usually see 40+mpg when towing but it is 250mile motorway runs. Even with the caravan on the back I get 33mpg. Westfalia detachable towbar but its been on more than off for the last few months. Can't fault mine as a towcar.

Just remember it is quite expensive to fit a towbar and get it connected up to the cars electronics for stability programme etc.

It was an option to have a pre fit kit installed at the factory when new to make towbar electrics installation easier. If this is missing it complicates matters. I would think on all second hand yetis without a towbar, this will be missing, unless the towbar has been removed to improve value on resale, as a towbar will typically reduce the cars value, due to a perceived harder life in the past.

If at all possible find one with a towbar already installed properly. If it has scotchlock connectors, walk away.
