Skoda going "downmarket"

Featured Replies

MY20 cars seem to have less standard equipment according  to some threads.  Possibly linking into VW Groups brand strategy.   They can't do much about differentiating the fundamentals of the cars, they still want to offer options, so take them from "standard" to dissuade people from getting them, or paying through the nose if they do!

I’m looking at specs currently and notice that the SEL loses the door bumpers and illuminated sun visors, but gains front sensors and colour MFD display. I can live with that.

Not sure about other models.

I’m still ticking £3K+ of extras to make it a nice place to live 😀

You're joking right? How would that not be standard on a car of this class...

The new strategy is long term, so we shouldn't be seeing any immediate fallout. Maybe the Kodiaq RS facelift will be my last ŠKODA.

I kid you not.

sun visors with mirror, illuminated” £10 extra - mandatory add on with £195 “LED interior light package

Just as “hot washers” come as a £35 mandatory add-on to a £305 “heated windscreen

All crazy but true.

I’m just glad that Skoda allow so many individual items to be selected as extras compared with the big bucks you have to pay for Packages from the likes of Audi, Mercedes or Mini.

But also the fact that they let you add Extra's - not possible on many brands now - choose between 3 or 4 models - thats it...

Seat for example

True. We looked at an Ateca as a Karoq alternative but the lack of customisation available steered us back to Skoda as we wanted some things that we couldn't make work on the Ateca without also having to have some stuff we didn't want like the massive sunroof thing. Shame really as I think the Ateca is slightly better looking.

Sun visors with mirrors were a listed possible extra on my SEL back in 2017 - but when I mentioned them to the dealer as I placed the order, he said they all had them anyway.  And indeed mine did.

Personally the lack of an illuminated mirror in the sun visor wouldn't bother me - I've never used them on any of my cars that have them...

Most of us blokes would agree with you but I know my wife would have a different opinion. I don't care if my lipstick is smeared a bit - always get it on my moustache anyways.

Moirrors and lights in the sunvisors are a PITA when you live with 6 women and girls who leave them open and in the down position every time they are in the bloody car. If it bothered me i'd mention it...

I don't really care for it either, but that's just something that I expect to be a given with the price of the car.

VAG have been pushing this idea for some time now... ever since the Superb was seen as stealing sales from the Passat!

And SEAT have been pushing at the 'sporty' image for some time, although even with the Cupras taking on Alfa Romeo may be a tough ask. (But at least they should be better rust-proofed!)

I've been comparing the Kodiaq, Tiguan and Audi Q3 for a few months, but Audi's latest restrictions in options and engine/transmission combinations have made the Q3 quite unrealistic as an option! It never had the heated windscreen/steering wheel options in the first place (dealer tells me it's a Ford copyright issue, I ask him why VW and Skoda can offer it then , dealer gives up) and other desirable options offered by VW & Skoda are either bundled in a very expensive package, or not there.

From a VAG perspective it makes sense.

I looked at a Koidaq/Tiguan Allspace/Ateca

In the spec that I was looking at the VW was the cheapest, then the Skoda with the Seat the most expensive.

I had always perceived the "hierachy" to be

SEAT

Skoda

VW

*shrugs*
