New Alloys

Featured Replies

Hi guys, sorry to but you all with the same old stuff, but I have brought some alloys for my 1.2 htp. Currently I have the standard 165/70r14 and now brought some seat leon 205/55/r16.

Took the tyre shop and been informed to stop the rubbing I need to go from 55 to 45 on the  tyre wall which is fine with me. But the issue I'm having is that the alloy barely sits on the part of the hub it goes on to, like barely. Seems like it is just about on there and the bolts are keeping it tight too.

I'd this safe to run with or not? And can I do anything if they ain't.

Thanks in advance

Liam

Yes, it's safe, the spigot centres the wheel and the bolts hold it on, once it's centred and bolted up tight to 110 Nm the spigot is no longer doing anything.

The tyre shop are right, you have the wrong sized tyres fitted.

To be pedantic, 7J wheels aren't type-approved for any Mk1 Fabia, so you'll be mildly illegal, and the tightening torque for the bolts is 120Nm.

You're right, I could have killed him with a typo! I was tired, it was late, I'll be more careful.

Fitting aftermarket wheels is not illegal if the insurance company have been correctly notified of the modification.

For ones of Permitted Sizes as defined by Skoda, that's true. Otherwise, strictly speaking, not.

I have called my insurance and they are fine and aware if the alloys upgrade from steelies. They said it's making no effect on my premium which is why I went ahead with it

You should be OK then, assuming you told them the wheel and tyre sizes.

As your alloy rims are 7Jx16 ET42, I would go with 215/45R16 tyres rather than 205/45R16 tyres. I've seen 205/45R16 tyres on 7 inch wide rims, and the sidewalls do look a bit stretched. 205/45R16 are fine on 6.5 inch wide rims.
