Hand brake

Featured Replies

Hi all

In need of advice please.

Fitted new hand brake cables new pads on the rear plus driver side rear brake caliper.

The thing is now if you put your foot on the brake peddle first then pull the hand brake on the rear of the car sinks down even.

When a only use the hand brake without using the peddle the passenger side goes down but not the driver side but yet both rear brakes work but a can't understand why.

Ave noticed the equaliser on the hand brake is pulling more on the right side here's a picture to show more of what a mean.20191013_204351.thumb.jpg.0cf4ac8e4ab184f2738f782080cc3256.jpg

Signs of a sticking rear caliper in my own experience.

Well that's what it would seem like but the right side is brand new been on the car less than a week thanks.

Check the handbrake lever on the caliper for proper movement whilst car up in the air. I believe it’s evident if it’s not moving properly.

A squinty equaliser is evidence that the cables aren't equal length and that's all.

No idea why applying the h/b should make the rear squat though.

If you free wheel slowly to a stop pull the hand brake the rear goes down slightly.

So a need more new cables do you reckon.

You can see clearly in the picture that the drivers side is now fully releasing (pulling the cable back).

Ideally both should have been changed same time but not cheap to buy I know.

That's the thing they both are new cables replaced at the same time that's why a can't understand whats going on.

But the passenger caliper is old?

Self adjuster on the passsenger side not working, lever on caliper will be moving much further than the other before applying the handbrake and not returning fully to a couple off mm from its stop.

Comparing one to the other the difference will be clear.

I stripped & rebuilt my calipers a coup;e of times and kept getting that problem, whatever you do dont adjust the handbrake or you will find the good caliper dragging the brakes which will wrong foot you into thinking it has the fault.

I believe I inherited the problem on my car where someone had fitted the piston seal the wrong way round.

The passenger side is older but not that old if you no what a mean.

So let's say if both are returning to there stop positions what would you think then.

Just an update.

Fitted NEW rear passenger side brake caliper.

So that's a new

Caliper on both sides.

2 new handbrake cables.

The problem now is the rear passenger side disc is getting a lot warmer than the driver side so that would equate for a sticking caliper.

Which a don't understand when everything is new.

The hand brake is fully adjusted off.

So am asking is there a certain way to fit rear calipers a certain way to adjust certain way to bleed them or what because these r really starting to get to me now am getting brake drag which seems to be causing bad fuel economy and the car seems to be struggling to drive as in pulling away.

A havnt checked the front brakes.

Any advice on these horrendous brakes please cheers.

Have you replaced the flexi brake lines to the rear calipers? If they are failing internally, they could be causing issues.

I assume the sliders were in good condition too?

Thanks 4 the reply.

No a have not checked or replaced the flexy hoses never thought about them thanks.

As 4 the sliders they r fine slide well cheers.

Just out of curiosity a havnt had time to check hoses yet because of work.

When drive car first thing in morning the car seems fine as in the foot brake pedal is perfect for braking but as the day goes by the pedal seems to go harder as on what am saying is the pressure seems to build up and the pedal goes hard.

When a stop switch engine off the pedal seems to go back to normal and the car runs fine.

So in anyone's experience could that be the result of a faulty brake hose not releasing the fluid back properly so it's keeping the pressure on that's why the pedal is going hard or am a clutching at straws with these brakes.

The rear n/s disc is hotter than the o/s rear disc bearing in mind the hand brake is fully adjusted off and everything is new on both sides.

Calipers

Cables

Pads.

Thanks
